However, it still did not stop the 27 entrants from getting their shred on. Kids oozing styleWith many of the younger riders throwing down tech trickery that would put most adults to shame, they were also oozing style, to really lay it on thick. However with age comes experience and the old boys were not going to take it lying down. Butters on and lipslides a plenty were the order of the day from them and war was waged. ![]() Winners Jordan and Tomski © Felix RobinsonThe old gondola car was a focal point for the afternoon as it provided some shelter and housed the DJ who kept the tunes going throughout the day. Format was two runs on each rail and the best scores counting. As everyone was a tad wet and the judges couldn’t feel their fingers and toes the final was cancelled and everyone legged it to the restaurant to get some food and dry off. The upside to this was most folk could make it back home in time to see the Scotland England rugby match. Women Hustling for Good Position Before the Roxy Chicken JamThe women have a big couple of weeks ahead with the US Open leading straight into the Roxy Chicken Jam. Current TTR leader, Lisa Wiik (NOR), will be trying to keep the competition at bay with some good finishes at the US Open which would set her up nicely moving into the final female 6Star event. She will need to keep on her toes as the talented Czech rider, Sarka Pancochova, is right behind Wiik in the rankings and will definitely be putting up a good fight. Swiss rider, Sina Candrian, and Finnish shredder and newcomer of the season, Enni Rukajärvi, are two other women with the drive and talent to give both Wiik and Pancochova a run for their money. ![]() Lisa Wiik at the US Open 2009 © Jake Stangel Watch the US Open Live on Go211.comIf you can’t make it out to Stratton, the Burton US Open will be webcast live March 19th-20th, 2010 on Go211.com with live announcers and up-to-the-minute scoring so you can keep track of all the action. Shaun White, Peetu Piiroinen, Scotty Lago, Hannah Teter and Kelly Clark all to compete. One of the most impressive snowboard athletes in the world today, Peetu Piiroinen (FIN), reconfirmed his reputation with a first place finish at the coveted 6Star Oakley Arctic Challenge. Thousand of fans at Tryvann Vinterpark in Oslo, Norway witnessed a piece of snowboarding history as 21-year old Peetu Piiroinen took first place in today’s slopestyle competition, and with an additional 1000 TTR ranking points on his account, he took an unassailable lead in the TTR World Rankings. In two weeks time, he will be crowned Swatch TTR World Snowboard Champion at the final 6Star event of the Tour, the Burton US Open. The Arctic Challenge podium was rounded out by Norwegian favourites Torstein Horgmo in second place and Mikkel Bang in third. ![]() Peetu Piiroinen Securing his Second TTR World Champion TitleThe young Fin has earned himself $35 000 USD today with his Arctic Challenge win. This season, Piiroinen has shown his nerves of steel, consistent technique and a seemingly untiring ability to tackle the various formats on the Swatch TTR Tour by taking podium placements at every 6Star event on the Tour. He took 2nd place at the 6Star Billabong Air & Style in Innsbruck, Austria, 3rd places at both the slopestyle and halfpipe at the 6Star O’Neill Evolution in Davos and victories in both formats at the 6Star Burton European Open in Laax, Switzerland. The deserving Piiroinen has shown his exceptional talent and caught the eye of the fans and media worldwide by successfully balancing his commitment on the TTR Tour even while excelling at events outside the Tour. He comments on his season; “It has been the best season ever. Silver medal at the Olympics and now the TTR title. I have got so many podium places and I have had no injuries, it could not have been better.” ![]() The exiting Arctic Challenge final saw Piiroinen stomp an incredibily clean last run that nudged Peetu into the top podium spot. His smooth run consisted of a switch cab 270 to fakie on the top rail, frontside 540 melon on the canon rail, backside 1080 late cork, backside rodeo 720 and a gigantic frontside crail on the hip. Piiroinen remains modest as always about his win, “I really didn't expect to win here at the Arctic Challenge, but I knew that I had a good chance to take the title here. It feels so good to take both. And it is the second title in a row. Now I can take it easy and maybe drink a beer.” The founder of the TTR tour and owner of the Oakley Arctic Challenge, Terje Haakonsen (NOR) praised Piiroinen’s ability to ride all formats on the TTR Tour, “That is why he is a good snowboarder. He is not specialized, but can ride all of them, also when it comes to quarterpipe he can ride really big. He had a lot of second and third places but he is always the guy that can win. He is just a really solid and inventive rider.” Valuable TTR ranking points handed out at The Oakley Arctic ChallengeThe race for the Top 5 spots in the Swatch TTR ranking is on fire with the final 6Star event, the Burton US Open, kicking off in just one week’s time. Eric Willett (USA) moved into the TTR World No.5 spot with a 9th place today and up and coming rookie Roope Tonteri (FIN) moved into TTR World No.7 with a 7th place. Swatch TTR World Champion Title on the Menu? The Arctic Challenge is one of the première snowboard events in the world and is the signature event of TTR co-founder, Terje Haakonsen. It was historically the crowning event of the TTR World Champion until the 2005/2006 season. This year could be a repetition of the early TTR years, as one rider has taken a hefty lead and with a good result at TAC can secure the TTR World Champion title into his name. 2008/2009 TTR World Champion, Peetu Piiroinen, has had an amazing season and was able to take the tour lead in January with podium placements at both formats of the 6Star O’Neill Evolution and later on with wins in the halfpipe and slopestyle formats of the 6Star Burton European Open. Peetu has managed to balance his TTR commitments as well as shine at events outside the TTR Tour winning an Olympic silver medal and last weekend taking the title at the Toyota Big Air in Japan. It is general knowledge that Piiroinen is a competition machine and all eyes are on Peetu to see how he will do at TAC and if he will be able to claim a second consecutive TTR World Champion Title. ![]() The coveted TTR Top 5 getting crowdedCurrently sitting in World No.3 on the TTR World Ranking list, the young Gjermund Braaten (NOR), will need to put on a solid performance at TAC to defend this spot, as there are many riders slated to be present who could challenge his position in the rankings. In fact, every rider present who is currently in the TTR Top10 stands the chance of moving into the World No. 3 spot: Marko Grilc (SLO), Antti Autti (FIN), Christian Haller (SUI), Stale Sandbech (NOR), Eric Willett (USA) and Janne Korpi (FIN). These riders are all looking to get a piece of the end of season Swatch TTR prize purse of $200,000 USD as well as the guaranteed invites to next season’s 6Star events. Following the Slopestyle format on Thursday the 5Star Burn River Jump took on its second format, the Straight Jump, this evening in the centre of Livigno, Italy. In front of a spectacular city backdrop and thousands of screaming spectators, the riders faced a nail-biting knock out final. Yale Cousino (USA) bagged his third consecutive title at this event, while Gjermund Braaten (NOR) who was closely in 2nd place made the most impressive move in the TTR World Rankings jumping into World No. 3, bumping Janne Korpi (FIN) into World No. 5. In third place today was Canada’s Mark McMorris and Eric Willett (USA) in fourth. The New TTR Word World No.3After the fireworks and prize giving the overjoyed Braaten enthuses “I feel so good and I am stoked that I even made it into finals. It’s been a surprisingly good day. Being in the TTR Top 5 is the dream of my life. Next I am going to the Arctic Challenge“, The young talent from Norway took the World Rookie Champion Title in 2007/2008 and 3rd place at the 6Star Burton European Open Slopestyle this January. Heading to the Oakley Arctic Challenge, which this year is a Slopestyle event, it is clear that Gjermund is a rider to watch out for. Burn River Jump Proves Itself As A Top Level 5Star EventThis season the Burn River Jump was awarded one more TTR star, and with its perfect set ups, stoked top level riders and ecstatic fans the River Jump proved that it has earned the 5Star honor. “It was one of the best slopestyle courses that I have ever ridden!” Eric Willett said after the event, with the two new top results he moved into TTR World No.9. The Straight Jump setup consisted of a 19m flat kicker and a gap over the Spoel river, followed by a jib section. Yale’s winning run consisted of a huge backside 1260 on the straight jump, a cab 540 on the Spoel River gap and backside 270 onto the Burn can. Two Formats, Two Sets Of TTR Ranking Points And New TTR Top 10 RidersWith the two formats each awarding up to 850 Swatch TTR World Ranking points, the Burn River Jump offered the opportunity for quite a few riders to move into the TTR Top 10. There were a few big leaps from Braaten, Korpi and Willet who made the Top 10 cut, while Roope Tonteri, Ville Uotila (FIN), Kevin Backström (SWE), Mark McMorris (CAN), Chris Sörman (SWE) and Jamie Nicholls (GBR) all improved on their previous positions and are now sitting in the TTR Top 20. ![]() Jamie Nicholls © TTR Keeping up with the TTR TourNext up on the Swatch TTR tour we have two very different events, both taking place on the 5th to the 7th March 2010. Attracting International Talent In The Search For TTR PointsWith two 5Star results on the menu from the Brux Slopestyle Contest and the Burn River Jump (Straight Jump), TTR riders will gather in force for their chance to collect valuable TTR ranking points and move up in the rankings. Top Swiss rider Christian Haller, who has just competed at the Vancouver Olympics, has confirmed his attendance and is motivated to improve on his fifth position on the world ranking list. He has a good chance to move into World No. 3 and with some great results this winter, such as a 7th place in the 6Star Burton European Open slopestyle format, he is one of the toughest contenders. Only a few other riders are in contention for the same spot in the Swatch TTR World Rankings. One is Gjermund Braaten, the rookie from Norway, who has since his title as the World Rookie Champion in 2007/2008 showed his strength as a slopestyle rider by taking 3rd place at the 6Star Burton European Open and currently sits in World No 11. Another one hungry for the glory is current World No. 9, Janne Korpi (FIN), who won the O’Neill Evolution slopestyle in 2009 and has already bagged some good results this season including a 7th place at the 5Star Burton Canadian Open slopestyle. Swatch TTR Top 10 Battle Heating UpThere are several riders who are battling it out for a Top 10 spot on the Swatch TTR World Ranking List including many up and coming rookies. Canadian Eric Willett, who placed 6th at the O’Neill Evolution slopestyle and is currently sitting in World No 14, will have to defeat the likes of World No. 15 Roope Tonteri (FIN) who was crowned World Rookie Champion in 2008/2009 and took 6th at the Canadian Open slopestyle, as well as Mikkel Bang (NOR) another strong slopestyle rider who placed 2nd at the BEO slopestyle this January. Many other top riders such as Janne Lipsanen (FIN), Ville Uotila (FIN), Mark McMorris (CAN), Kevin Backström (SWE) and Ethan Morgan (GER) will put on their best show to get a result that will lift them up in the TTR ranking. For the stories and photos behind the scenes, videos and more please keep an eye out for www.ttrworldtour.com TTR Pro Snowboard, the owner and operator of the TTR World Snowboard Tour would like to congratulate the 2010 Vancouver Olympics halfpipe winners, Shaun White (USA) for his second consecutive gold medal, Peetu Piiroinen (FIN) for taking home the silver medal, and Scotty Lago (USA) for his bronze. White won the TTR World Snowboard Tour 2006/2007, after claiming his first Olympic gold in Torino 2006, showing himself as one of the world’s strongest snowboarders. Piiroinen was crowned the Swatch TTR World Snowboard Champion 2008/2009 last winter and has shown his force in the competition scene yet again with his Olympic silver. As the current leader in the Swatch TTR ranking he is heading towards the first ever repeat performance of the tour victory. TTR Events Serving as a Pre Olympic battleground.During the onset of the Olympic buzz the TTR tour felt the impact, as it was the first place where athletes had an opportunity to measure the new benchmark trick – the double cork – in competition. This season, to the delight of both judges and audiences alike, we have seen the riders develop a wide variety of double corks, showcasing them at various tour events. This brain boggling trick emerged into TTR halfpipe competition at the beginning of the 2009/2010 TTR Season where Shaun White for the first time ever unleashed a back to back double cork set in order to beat Luke Mitranis’s (USA) Double Cork 900 in the 5Star Burton New Zealand Open halfpipe. The explosive development of this trick has been seen at many TTR events since, such as the halfpipe formats of the 6Star O’Neill Evolution and the 6Star Burton European Open, where Piiroinen landed a Cab Double Cork 10 on his final run and jumped into the competition lead. Managing the time between the TTR Tour and the OlympicsEvery fourth winter the Olympic year sees a rush of riders to the FIS (Fédération Internationale de Ski) World Cup, which serves as Olympic qualifier. The TTR respects the athletes’ wishes to succeed in the Olympic battles and has always found a way to accommodate for this in the tour planning. Most riders are able to divide their time between both the tours, such as current TTR leader Peetu Piiroinen who has managed his Olympic commitments while taking podiums at nearly every event and format he has competed in season 2009/2010. The Swatch TTR season is still in full swing with the next events coming up in Italy, the 5Star Burn River Jump, and in Norway with the 6Star Oakley Arctic Challenge. The tour final events 6Star Burton US Open and the 6Star Roxy Chicken Jam are coming up in March and will showcase the crowning of the 2009/10 Swatch TTR World Snowboard Champion. She managed to hold on to her lead throughout the next runs and impressed everybody with super strong riding all the way through the finals. Enni’s winning run started off with a 50-50 boardslide to fakie on the box, a cab 360 slide off the pole jam, a cab 270 boardslide on the jib tube, a 50-50 on the box, a stalefish on the quarterpipe feature and finished off with a frontside 360 indy, a backside mute 540 and a cab 720 over the kicker line. On the men’s side it was 2004 BEO Junior winner Mikkel Bang who took over the early lead with his first run that earned him 92 points. 08/09 Swatch TTR World Tour Champion Peetu Piiroinen topped Mikkel’s score by only one point and took over the lead with 93 points on his final run. Peetu’s winning run included a 270 boardslide 270 out on the box, a backside 360 mute off the pole jam, a frontside disaster on the jib tube, a switch frontside boardslide on the box, an inverted cab 720 on the quarterpipe and a backside 1080 tailgrab, a frontside 900 and a cab 1080 on the kicker-line. 2nd placed Mikkel mentioned: “I’m so stoked I could land all my tricks. It is crazy how many young riders are riding on such a high level. It means a lot to me to be on the podium again after winning the BEO junior title years ago.” The 3rd spot on the podium was taken by 19 year old Gjermund Braaten (NOR) who fought his way into the finals all the way from the pre-qualification. His second run earned him the well-deserved podium spot after riding strong throughout the week and especially today. Gjermund had a great day and stated: “I had the best run of my life and it’s the best result for me so far. I had to go through a long journey all the way through the pre-qualifications, but gained more confidence day by day.” Today’s slopestyle finalists also earned valuable points towards both the Burton Global Opens Series title (US$ 200.000 prize-money) and the Swatch Ticket To Ride World Championship titles. Both the BGOS as well as TTR standings saw some changes today with Christian Haller (SUI) taking over the lead in the BGOS men’s rankings and moving into the TTR Top 5, as he now sits in World No. 5. Christian Haller has a chance to move into World No. 2 after tomorrow’s halfpipe finals. Both Peetu Piiroinen and Sarka Pancochova defended their TTR tour lead today. Sarka is now also leading the BGOS women’s standings.
