Calling all UK shredders with a cameraphone
Posted Tuesday 5th January 2010, 2:02 pm by Spencer Claridge

Following long discussions with the King of Snow organisers last year, SCUK convinced them to create a national league to encourage all-comers to take part in this truly global, yet open-standard competition.

As you'll notice, one Colin Andrews from Glasgow has taken full advantage and is currently out in front on the UK League Table (one ran), but it's very early days with another 13 rounds to go and shredders can enter whenever they please and still stand a chance of winning or simply taking part - it costs nothing after all.

So, if you're off to the dryslope or indoor slopes this week, why not add a bit of spice to proceedings by getting the camera phone out, reeling off a backside 180, uploading the sucker and get yourself a mini-league going between mates or otherwise. What a doddle, and you get your trick judged by an international panel.

Well, good luck shredders and look forward to giving Colin Andrews a little competition.

Round 02: BS 180° from Tomas Tuzar (CZE)

Round 2 is online. Horsefeathers teamrider Tomas Tuzar out of Czech Republic is submitting the second trick and you are pleased to copy it!

BS 180° is the call which you should copy on every similar obstacle (kicker, cliff, drop or whatever you can do a BS 180° on/off) on mother earth and with as much style and power as possible. Don´t forget to show your face right into the cam after you did your BS 180°!

This round’s winner will get a nice Horsefeathers stuff-package including the Horsefeathers Fargo Jacket and the Horsefeathers Beep T-Shirt – total value about 250,- EUR!

This means that you can stick and film the tricks for the next 4 rounds on one single day in the snow. The upload and user voting will be in the corresponding week of the particular trick.

IMPROVED JUDGING SYSTEM: Besides the user voting you can gain additional round points in this year’s edition, too. The amount of round points will increase with the complexity of the tricks. You can gain 1 point in round 1 for your accomplished trick plus 1-10 points via the user voting. You can gain 2 points in round 2 for your accomplished trick plus 1-10 points via the user voting and so on. This means that you can get a total amount of 11 points in round 1 respectively 24 points in round 14. The more challenging the tricks the more points you can get. That’s fair play fellas!

REGISTRATION POSSIBLE 24/7: From now on, you can enter the contest in every single round until the very end of King of S.N.O.W. Therefore, your chances for the overall win are equal even when you enter way after round 1. If you are just eager for the particular round prize, you can participate in single rounds, too.

RANKING OF NATIONS: Premiering in this year’s edition there is a ranking of nations besides the global ranking. This means that you can directly compete with your national buddies. Everyone who is on top of his country’s ranking will receive a massive Horsefeathers package and some other useful stuff at the end. The only premise is that at least 25 buddies from your country must also compete in the King of S.N.O.W., except in the UK where SCUK have had this restriction lifted!

BLUE TOMATO ROOKIE-AWARD: Whoever is on top of the age group 6-15 years in the global ranking will win a unique Blue Tomato Sponsoring including free stuff support and massively reduced prices in the Blue Tomato shops.

HORSEFEATHERS QUEEN OF S.N.O.W: Attention girls! You can win a complete Horsefeathers Girls Outerwear and Streetwear Combo and a Blue Tomato Streetwear Package if you are the leader in the girl’s ranking and stick at least 5 tricks!

GRAND FINAL: The final of this year’s Horsefeathers King of S.N.O.W will take place from 16th – 18th of April in the Horsefeathers Superpark in Planai (AUT). After round 14 the 10 leaders in the global ranking will be invited to Austria (including free accommodation, catering and lift tickets) to rock the final. On top, you will get a professional photo shooting in the Horsefeathers Superpark built and shaped by Q-Parks and have the chance to shoot some sick shots for the upcoming interviews.

Quiksilver King of Snow winner and interview
Posted Wednesday 29th April 2009, 8:05 pm by Spencer Claridge

Following a season's worth of dialling new tricks and shooting videographic evidence of your endeavours, the Quiksilver King of Snow crowns its champion Benno Postert from Austria. Though the QKOS failed to fully engage the UK freestyle contingent this year, we've had plenty of talks with the organisers on how to improve this concept for the UK rippers and believe that 2010 will be a real winner.

Benno Postert – Winner of the Quiksilver King of S.N.O.W 2009.

Interview

What to say about Benno? He´s always motivated for some action, no matter if it´s sports, partying or anything else. We’ve had the privelege to get to know him about 3 years ago and since then, Benno has not only been a great shredbuddy, but also a good friend to us. In that time, it was always amazing to see how he was pushing his snowboard skills to the maximum!
This guy from the western part of Germany was getting better and better! But not only that he’s an extremely talented snowboarder, you should see him surfing or skating, too! Furthermore, he seems to be quite smart: he is lined up right now to catch his master in biology! He likes to travel all around the world and is always keen to meet new people and see different cultures and landscapes. Right at this moment he´s travelling all around Europe with his Belgian girlfriend – damn, he knows how to enjoy life! Snowboarding is for sure a big part in his life, but he’s also aware of the fact that there are many other things to experience on earth! You rule man!
Maxi and Alex

Hey Benno, you just won the first global Game of S.N.O.W – the Quiksilver King of S.N.O.W! How are you now?
The Contest was super fun. It was an exiting challenge for me and my good friend and filmer, Matze. Straight after La Plagne I left on a trip with the La Famiglia Crew to Lake Tahoe. The day of the results, we had a long and busy day shooting untill sunset. So I totally forgot all about it. When I checked my emails at night, it was a sudden surprise – the whole house went crazy!

Originally you are out of a small village called Datteln, which is located in the western part of Germany. There are no mountains and it´s not snowing in winter. Why did you choose snowboarding?
In Datteln there are large canals, cargo ships and friendly people. No mountains, no snow. Once a year I had the opportunity to go to the Alps, with my family, or joining a youth camp. 10 days riding per year, yuhu. As a child, the whole year I was looking forward to these ten snowy days.
Although there are some indoor slopes near to where I lived, I never entered one. Only one time I saw the inside of a fake mountain, watching through the entrance from the outside. This happened during a rail trip with La Famiglia, where we were using the fake snow.

At LaPlagne you told us that you started snowboarding three years ago. How did you get that good on your snowboard?
This winter it is the 4th season I am living in the alps. As soon as I have some time off at university I get the chance to shred. I don’t know how I reached this level in such a short time. I just love to strap on my boots, shred fresh snow, jib and speed up on big kickers. I can’t really describe what snowboarding makes me feel, but the best word I can think of is something like ‘complete’. Maybe you understand what I mean...

Why didn’t you upload the Round 6 trick – a BS 180° Switch 50-50 Switch FS 360° out?
I really like to jib, but good handrail sessions are rare. It is much easier to get the kick with flying, while jumping kickers. Though on a slushy spring day I have the most fun jibbing around with my SAnE!-bros… Big up SAnE!

Was it a lot of work for you to go out and film every 14 days the new trick? Who helped you out?
From the start, we entered the competition as a team – me and Mathias “Matze“ Reif. He came up with the idea and told me: “hey, that’s our chance. You are able to do almost any trick you want and I will film everything”. We are pretty close friends and work really good together. Filming with Matze – that's a negative stress report!

How was it for you, to be invited to LaPlagne to show the final trick?
The trip was amazing. Quiksilver made sure we got treated like kings, no joke. Pick-up and drop-off at the airport, sleeping in a fancy hotel on the hill, eating crazy good food, getting a couple of drinks and so on...
And together with Mick Wallace from Quiksilver and the Finnish guys Saku, Martin and Niko, I got part of a cool crew for a couple of days. Mita vitua! Funny guys and good shredheads! It's a pity, I wasn’t able to show you a super stylish BS9, sorry guys...

What was the best on this trip?
Shit, I had such a good time. The weekend was spitting new experiences. But the few seconds, preparing to enter the pipe, were the most intense.

How was it to to ride the Quiksilver Chromatophobia Halfpipe Event with all the European bignames?
To enter this high rated pipe contest and to wait at the drop-in of this perfect shaped pipe next to these talented guys, surrounded by excited spectators and the hungry media gave me a really cool feeling! Do you know the part of a pipe competition, where the rider stomps the last trick of a perfect run and rides into the crowd? Standing there at the end of my run I asked myself how I got there!

What are you doing with the 5.000,- Bucks you earned while winning Quiksilver King of S.N.O.W?
'I' actually means 'we' – Matze and me. We gonna sit next to each other behind the wave set of the longest lefthander, in Peru. We will grin and wish each other an unforgettable ride. Before we entered the competition, we decided if we would win the money we would go there.

What are your plans for your future?
There is no big future plan. I will take life the way it comes. Discovering the world's hidden places and taking in new experiences.
Thanks to my sponsors Artec, Ziener and Adidas Eyewear, Lisa, Scharti, Blais and Dragan. Thanks to my Friends, Family and Bette. Best regards to Datteln and Innsbruck!

King of S.N.O.W crowns their winer
Posted Tuesday 14th April 2009, 12:51 pm by Dunx

After four months the first Quiksilver King of S.N.O.W was selected by all participants. After eight hard rounds Benno Postert out of Innsbruck, Austria took the lead and won $5,000. His win is even more impressive, since Benno is out of the northern part of Germany and started snowboarding only three years ago! Thumbs up, Benno!

Second came Martin Kalliola out of Finland, who stuck his BS 900° at the final in La Plagne, France pretty well, but could not take the lead.

Here are Benno´s tricks.

Quiksilver King of S.N.O.W Finale

Last weekend the four King of SNOW finalists came to Quiksilver Chromatophobia in La Plagne and had 2 hours time to stick the last tick – BS 900° shown by Freddy Austbo.

Now everybody can vote for the best BS 900° until Sunday and then we have the Quiksilver King of SNOW 2009.

On top of that our four finalists received a wildcard for Mathieu Crepel´s Invitational "Chromatophobia", which allowed them to ride the La Plagne Superpipe with stars like Markku Koski, Oliver Gittler, Frederik Austbo, Arthur Longo and Christian Haller to name a few.

Saturday was the big day for the finalists. They had two hours time, to stick their BS 900° at the reserved Kicker at La Plagne snowpark. Saku was injured, so he couldn´t ride at all, but he told us, he´ll be back next year! Now it´s your turn to vote for the best BS 900°.

This winter is going to be one giant worldwide session!

From now on every 14 days one of your favorite Pros will present a trick you have to imitate within two weeks and on a similar obstacle. Once you have sticked and – hopefully – filmed the trick you must upload it as video file to the Quiksilver King of S.N.O.W platform. Needless to say that you should try to redo the trick with as much style as possible in order to get as many judging points as possible in the worldwide ranking. We will make you rich and famous!

The top four snowboarders that have earned the most judging points after Round 7 will be invited by Travis Rice and Mathieu Crepel to their invitational-only event in La Plagne, France – called Chromatophobia. T-Rice will present the final trick in the Quiksilver King of S.N.O.W snowpark the four finalists have to copy. Don´t forget to show your face right into the cam after you did your Switch BS 180° Indy!

This round’s winner will get a nice Quiksilver Package including: Quiksilver Travis Rice Signature Goggle and the Quiksilver Premium SnowPack (technical snowboard features, suspensions system, LED lighting system and premium audio components – make the backcountry a whole new experience).

We will make you rich and famous!

The top four snowboarders that have earned the most judging points after Round 7 will be invited by Travis Rice and Mathieu Crepel to their invitational-only event in La Plagne, France – called Chromatophobia. Quiksilver will assume just everything – flight, accommodation and catering – no matter from where on this planet you have to travel.

T-Rice will present the final trick in the Quiksilver King of S.N.O.W snowpark the four finalists have to copy. A camera team will capture every single trick and finally upload it to www.king-of-snow.com. Afterwards the tricks will be judged one more week for the very last time. The one with the highest score may be pleased with the 5,000 USD cash and short interviews with all our media partners worldwide.

As a special goodie the four lucky finalists will get a wildcard to compete with Mathieu, Travis and many other topguns at the Chromatophobia.

    Quiksilver King of S.N.O.W
Posted Friday 21st November 2008, 12:27 pm by Stu Brass

    First worldwide online-snowboard-contest.

On December the 15th, 2008, the heads behind BESTTRICK bring you a new snowboard-trick-battle on WWW-KING-OF-SNOW.COM. Yeah, it's true, from December on you will be able to battle in Game of S.K.A.T.E.–mode for quite a big amount of cash. And the best part: everybody can take part for free! And we really mean EVERYBODY – from all around the world and SCUK is the official UK partner.

Copy the tricks of the pros with your own skills and your own style on similar obstacles of your choice, wherever you are, and win 5,000 USD cash as well as fame (by various short-interviews published worldwide).

This winter it's one worldwide session!

Every 14 days, one of your favourite pros shows a trick on www.king-of-snow.com which you should copy over the next two weeks on a similar obstacle, then film it and upload it to the platform. To score extra points in the worldwide ranking, you should style your tricks as good as you can, because in every round (wich means every 14 days) the most hard or most stylish trick will be rewarded with a huge stuff-package.

You're gonna be rich and famous!

Who, after 8 rounds, has picked up the most points, will be crowned Quiksilver King Of S.N.O.W and will be rewarded with 5.000 USD and short interviews with all our media-partners worldwide. To keep things exciting until the very end, we will give out letters for every trick you did not manage to copy – similar to the rules of well-known Game of S.K.A.T.E This means, you have three free shots and get a letter for every of those tries (S.N.O.). The fourth trick not done gives you the last letter (W.), which makes S.N.O.W complete – and you're out, your points forfeit. This means: even if somebody clearly is on top, it's still possible for him to lose all points in the last round theoretically!

    The RULES:

All given tricks of this contest were performed by professionals. Please don’t try to copy them on the same level if you’re not capable to handle it. Do not overestimate yourself! We’re pretty sure it’s much more fun to learn on a lower level and ride away successfully than bringing the session to an abrupt ending by a stay in hospital. Thanks and have fun with a virtual session!

    1. Every second Monday, a top-snowboarder presents a trick for you to imitate.
    2. You have a maximum of two weeks to redo the trick. Please upload the video-sequence of your trick to www.king-of-snow.com. A countdown shows the time left for uploads.
    3. During a round, all other users are able to rate your trick, even if they're not taking part by themselves.
    4. The one who does the trick best and scores the highest ratings, wins the round. The winner will be presented with a valuable price immediately and is mentioned in the news-sections of the media partners worldwide.
    5. The ratings of the single tricks sum up to the King of S.N.O.W-Ranking. Who owns the highscore and is on first place after the contest is over, is crowned King of S.N.O.W and pockets the first prize.
    6. If you can't manage to finish a trick within the time stated or if a trick isn't completely done or finished in a clean way (if your hand or another bodypart is touching the ground, or it isn't clearly identifiable whether you rode away or not), you'll get a letter.
    7. If this happens to you four times and you collected the sequence of the four letters S.N.O.W, you're out of the contest and your points forfeit. So you can't bail more than three tricks. Make it four bails and you're out!
    8. You're free to choose where in the world and on whatever obstacle you want to redo the trick (for example: if a trick was made on a kicker in the first place, you have to do it on a kicker too, but you can use whatever kicker you want – park or backcountry, you choose. Same thing for rails, and so on). Better skills and style will surely convince the audience to grant you more points.
    9. You can join the contest until the fourth given trick is on... But you will get a letter for every missed one. If you enter in round #3, two tricks will be over by then, so you get letters "S" and "N", but still will have a chance to be crowned King of S.N.O.W and score first prize.
    10. The voting for your tricks end, when the period for uploading is over. So upload your tricks as early as possible and more people will have a chance to vote for you.
    11. To take part in, you´ll need your own BESTTRICK-account at www.king-of-snow.com.
    12. All tricks uploaded by you, have to be done by you personally. Please SHOW YOUR FACE directly after you made a trick, give us a smile right into the cam. Footage on which you cannot be identified, will be declined.
    13. Older and already uploaded videos at BESTTRICK.COM won't be accepted, since you should redo tricks, not give them.
    14. Our fair-playing judges will decide whether a trick counts or not. This decision will be correct – and is final.
    15. If you don't observe these rules, you will be banned from the contest.
    16. The organizers are not liable for any human injury or material damage.
    17. There is no legal recourse.

    Have fun and good luck!
