Bindings for next season
Posted Tuesday 24th January 2012, 1:23 pm by Dunx
Is it that time already? ISPO hits the tradeshow floor on 29th January, so people are already talking about what's on the horizon for next season. We're not normally that interested until they're in the shops, but thought this article by Tom Wilson-North (Zero G, Chamonix) was quite interesting and a good heads-up on what you might expect from next year's bindings.

The binding market has been pretty static for a few years. Same old colour palettes, shapes, buckles, designs and theories. Fortunately, 12/13 sees some big investments and things are shaking up. Little companies doing big things. New materials, fresh colour codes and inspired baseplate ideas. Innovative approaches, more comprehensive lines, less filler. Tom Wilson-North checks it out.

Dainese and FIS developing airbag for downhill skiers
Posted Tuesday 24th January 2012, 9:26 am by Dunx
The International Ski Federation (FIS) and motor racing manufacturer Dainese have presented the initial results of the D-air® Ski project, the aim of which is to investigate the potential application of air bag technology to top-level Alpine Skiing. The current project seeks to improve the protection of athletes by applying D-air® technologies (the air bag designed around the human body).

The project is currently in the data collection phase which involves 16 World Cup athletes, including Aksel Lund Svindal (NOR), and incorporates 12 inertial platforms (sets of sensors fully integrated into the back guard).

“Research is well under way since last season, seeking to define the exact point at which the racer is no longer in control and a fall becomes inevitable. Since this is such a complex matter, whilst much data has already been gathered, further information is still needed.” said Günther Hujara, FIS Chief Race Director for the men’s Alpine Skiing.

The ergonomic tests with participating athletes began with the definition of precise instructions concerning the shape of the bag and the positioning of the gas generators. More than 70 descents have been monitored so far, the details of which have already been used to develop the electronic and pneumatic sections simultaneously and in close involvement with the athletes.

The 2012 program envisages the continuation of data collection to define the activation algorithm, as well as further tests with the athletes for the fine-tuning of the pneumatic part, with the aim of having a prototype for use on the slopes by the end of the year. 2013 will be dedicated to the fine-tuning of the final prototype for Sochi 2014.

The D-air Ski covers shoulders, collarbone, back (the chest will be considered in the next development step) and limits the movement of the neck during a fall. The special bag opens in about 50 milliseconds, reaches maximum protection in less than 100 milliseconds and reduces the force transmitted to the shoulders and back by up to 85%.

Quiksilver opens first Mountain Boardriders in Chamonix
Posted Wednesday 21st December 2011, 2:13 pm by Dunx
Quiksilver has set up its winter base in the very heart of Chamonix, renovating an old building with 400 m2 of floor space on three levels, and substantially refurbishing the building’s structure to take full advantage of the space. The sober, welcoming frontage totally respects the local Chamonix architecture, with wide bay windows opening onto the store so passers-by have a great view of what’s happening inside.

For the interior, Quiksilver has opted for a modern version of the typical mountain barn style, using natural and ethically sourced materials: old wood, dry stone, slate, glass and metalwork. Quiksilver enlisted the talents of local illustrator Charlie Adam for the wall murals on the inside and outside of the Boardriders. Charlie, who is a big fan of 1950s posters, has come up with a light-hearted new take on the world of skiing.

Much of the ground floor is given over to accessories, with an avalanche of gloves, hats and snow helmets. Watches and masks are displayed beneath backlit glass bells that sit on metal pulleys like little cable-cars.

Quiksilver called on the expertise of stonemason and mountain guide Roland Creton to build a dry stone wall running like a backbone through the store and from the basement to the upper floor. A section of the wall is covered with nine LCD screens showing footage of mountain action, a real tableau vivant that can be seen from the street, day and night. There’s a wall covered with old wood decorated with a mix of digital photo frames and vintage frames with old sepia photos of Chamonix.

The basement is accessed via a wide staircase with tiered steps that can be used to stage concerts, exhibitions, film screenings or artistic collaborations.

The basement itself is home to the technical corner, a veritable incubator of skiing and snowboarding gear, that showcases the widest technical range of products from Quiksilver, Roxy, DC, Libtech and Gnu, for sale or hire. There are also exclusive items like ZAG skis to be found, and an opportunity to test out new equipment.

The Boardriders organizes day or week-long skiing and snowboarding courses , as well as cross-country or glacier tours led by top professionals and mountain guides. The Charlet brothers, natives of Chamonix and among the foremost exponents of freeriding and freestyle, will be overseeing the quality of these extreme adventures.

The Boardriders is also a warm and fun place to hang out, with a bar, comfy chairs and Wi-Fi access, where customers can grab a hot chocolate in the morning as they check up on the snow conditions, or kick back and reflect on the day’s activities in a relaxed apres-ski atmosphere in the lounge.

Boardriders Chamonix

According to a story on www.espn.com, big-mountain snowboarder Jake Blauvelt and his agent began contemplating a potential boot sponsor for Blauvelt last spring and they did something odd: On a whim, they e-mailed a skateboarding team manager at a company that had never made snowboard boots.

Ortovox Transceiver 3plus
Posted Saturday 3rd December 2011, 11:00 am by Stu Brass
A transceiver should be an essential part of an snowboarder's kit if they are going off piste, not only to raise your own chances of being found if an avalanche goes off, but also to find your mates if they get caught. It's sods law that if you don't have one you'll be the one needing it.

I've had my Ortovox F1 since my first season back in 1994 and remember thinking £200 was a massive outlay (the whole season cost me £2k back then), but considering I've had it for 17 years I reckon I've had my value out of it.

Anyway, as with most things it's time to update kit and since things have moved on from 1994 I thought it time to get a new pair. So I purchased the latest Ortovox 3plus (all the blurb can be found below), I don't normally post this sort of thing but thought I'd highlight to those thinking of spending time off piste (when the snow actually comes!) that it's a life saver! Being covered for off piste snowboarding is all well and good, but they've got to find you in the first place!

About the Ortovox 3plus transceiver:

BE FOUND MORE EASILY

Up until now an avalanche transceiver has, above all, increased the safety of a companion.

With the new 3+ from Ortovox it is different, it increases the safety of the carrier by simply cutting out weak-signal connections!

SMART ANTENNA

The 3+ is equipped with sensors for intelligent position recognition.

The sensors analyse instantly the position of the device which is buried.

The transmission antenna with the best reception is automatically activated and leads the searcher on the optimum route to the buried victim. The search time is noticeably reduced by this technology - for the first time the device owner can improve his/her own safety.

FAST FIND

The LCD display with real time depiction concentrates on the most important things: the distance to and the position of the buried victim. It couldn't be simpler! The directional arrow shows the direction to search and the distance display shows how far to go. Due to this reduction of information down to only the most necessary items, the searcher maintains the overview in a stressful situation and is led to the victim intuitively.

FINE SEARCH

The 3+ is convincing due to its modern 3-antenna technology which, when carrying out a refined search the area to be probed is limited exactly.

The microprocessor converts the received signals in real time to optical representations on the display and acoustic signals. The circle displayed shows at a glance if one is getting closer to the signal source or further away. The optimized search acoustics increase or decrease the pitch of the tone in the area of the refined search and in this way support the visual representation.

EASY MARK

In the clearly designed LCD display up to 3 buried victims are represented. As soon as the first transmitter has been found it can be marked with the "pin" key and blended out. The buried victim is displayed as pinned and the search can be continued. To make it as simple as possible for even inexperienced searchers to operate in stressful situations the 3+ was equipped with only one push key -- - the "pin" key.

ERGONOMICS AND RGONOMICS ECONOMY IN FOCUS

The 3+ is covered in a protective rubber sleeve whose shape was matched to that of the human hand. Even when wearing the thickest of gloves excellent operation of the keys is guaranteed, just as optimum display contrast is guaranteed under any light conditions -- - even at night (Night Search Mode). The 3+ is provided with a novel Power Management System -- - with only one battery it has a transmission capacity of very nearly 250 hours.

The device is supplied with a small comfortable carrying bag which sits well and does not bulge. With a weight of less than 200 grams including the battery and the bag, the 3+ is attractive to even the most ascent oriented winter athletes who value maximum safety.

Once the searcher is in the refined search area, the patented circular display, in combination with arrows and distance values, assists in the search. It is immediately shown whether the searcher is approaching or going away from the victim. The searcher can mark victims in the pinpoint field and immediately continue with the search.
