A new initiative by Menter Iaith (
Language Initiative), a community-based organisation which works to raise the profile of the Welsh Language in a specific area, has brought Welsh language teaching to snowboarders.
Bedwyr ap Gwyn from Menter Iaith Conwy said they have decided to venture into a different environment this year and offer Welsh language snowboarding lessons . Sessions are being held on the artificial surface at the Llandudno Ski Slope.
"This is the mountains and more importantly the beautiful white stuff that falls on them - snow," he said.
The group has obtained financial assistance from Awards for All, part of the Big Lottery Fund, a grant-making organisation created to administer the funding of good causes. It has also received financial assistance from Awards for All, part of the Big Lottery Fund, and Community Chest from Sports Council Wales.
The first organised sessions have already taken place with 14 youngsters given lessons in the first week.
Bedwyr said, "It's important that these kind of opportunities are available through the medium of Welsh, along with all other outdoor adventure activities.
"At present there is a great shortage of Welsh speaking staff in the outdoor industry. We hope that between the surfing and snowboarding we can sustain a vibrant club."
The club will be meeting regularly throughout the year. For more information contact 01492 642357.
