Hundreds of students descend on SNO!zone for Ski 2 Help
Posted Thursday 21st February 2008, 10:39 am by Dunx

On 5th March 700 students from universities around the UK descend on SNO!zone, the indoor slope at Xscape Castleford to raise thousands of pounds for charity in the annual Ski 2 Help sponsored ski event. This year’s Ski 2 Help have selected to raise money for 2 charities, the British Neurological Research Trust and the Paralympics - Road to Beijing.

Students from as far as Inverness and Southampton will be taking part in the final following heats that have taken place at the SNO!zone snow slopes across the country. The event will take place in association with the UK final of the British University Indoor Slope Championships which will see hundreds of finalists compete head to head in Slalom, Dual Slalom and freestyle Slopestyle championships. The sponsored ski and board relay will run simultaneously all day accompanied by a DJ marathon and bands. The day will end with prize-giving and an after party for all participants to celebrate working together to raise thousands of pounds.

“We are very happy to be raising funds towards these very worthwhile causes and hope the money Ski 2 Help raises can contribute towards keeping the research and Paralympic support moving forward.” states Lou Jennings, the event organiser.

SNO!zone have hosted the event, which was started by Lou Jennings in 2005 each year and are extremely pleased that the charities chosen this year will help those with impaired mobility and support home grown talent and budding Disability snowsports athletes. SNO!zone Site Director at Castleford Carl Walmsley says “ SNO!zone are making a continued effort to raise awareness, funds and the profile of Snowsports for all and have recently invested in further specialist Adaptive training for a number of selected instructors in order to improve access and training available for customers.”

SNO!zone continually invests in this area of the industry and in December 07 were delighted to be joined by James Cufflin, a dedicated Disability Snowsports Development Officer, on location at the slope in Braehead, Glasgow. His role is to provide improve access to the slopes across the whole of the central belt of Scotland. SNO!zone is also proud to be working with Sean Rose, Winter Paralympian and World Cup Skier and Joe Willoughby, a female Giant Slalom Champion who is now ranked 8th in the world at GS, 10th in Super G and 10th place in the Combined, 5th in Europe and 1st in Great Britain. Both recently competed in the Europa Cup and World Cup with fantastic results. The pair are currently training with the British Disabled Ski team in Canada.

Anyone wishing to spectate at the event can catch the action from 10am -10pm on Wed 5th March at SNO!zone, Xscape Castleford.
