North Africa's largest ski centre of Oukaļmeden in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco in North Africa is due to receuive a massive upgrade as one of six development projects in the country announced by Dubai based Emaar Investment with a combined value of $7 billion (£4 billion).
Emaar Properties, which rates itself as the world's number one property developer, has signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) this week with His Majesty King Mohammed VI, King of Morocco. Emaar was represented by its Chairman Mr. Mohamed Ali Alabbar. The MoU opens the door for Emaar to develop communities comprising residential, commercial, retail, leisure and entertainment facilities.
Oukaļmeden is a relatively easy trip from Mararakech. Initially developed by the French and surveyed over the past decade by international resort planners with the aim of improving the basic infrastructure. New lifts that were supposed to arrive from Spain before 2000 failed to materialise and snow conditions remain a big gamble for anyone planning a visit - mid-January to mid-February are the best bet. There are two ski jumps and its possible to take time out and go surfing at the coast nearby.
The latest development plans for Oukaimeden are rather sketchy but a press release styates:
"Oukaimeden, the valley of four winds, is set to become the ultimate four season mountain destination for recreation, entertainment, relaxation and residence as well as being the Middle East and Africa's only golf and ski resort.
In keeping with Berber design and architecture of the great Atlas Mountains, Oukaimeden village will combine commercial, office, retail, entertainment and dining amenities with a full range of residential options to choose from. With 2,000 hotel rooms, more than 300 retail units and 25,000 sq. metres of business and conference facilities planned, Oukaimeden will be a year round hive of activity."
Construction work is scheduled to start on the project this year.
