I don't know how many of you guys read Mr LeFeber's (AngrySnowboarder) interview on his blog thingamy with one of the founders of Echelon, but I did! Sounded interested to see what they'd be releasing when they put their product range on display.

Seems they've released their boards, if not the bindings so far which you can see here

My question is probably a bit moot (as riding the boards is really the only way to test things properly) but I've not really noticed much that seems particularly 'new' about their range of boards? Perhaps it's about the combination of tech's being great for a specific purpose, I think I remember reading something about that, but there's nothing that really caught my eye that seemed particularly different.

Be interesting to see what happens when they put their bindings on display to see what's so 'awesome' as they put it about them.

Other than their 'soldiers' discount and a content with mostly military undertones/bias I can't seem to draw out what makes them particularly different to a lot of other companies?

My god i know its a company started by a couple of military engineers type people but an entire range with graphics based on planes, guns, aircraft carriers and bombs...for a snowboard company?? Im sure that will attract a lot of people but it'l also put sh1t load off them too, no way i'd ride a board with a symbol of the US military as its graphic. Their entire brand seems to be based around military symbolism, and they're based in Big Bear California which is proper long haired yo yo yo boy, weird.

As for Military discount, its not suprising. Till you've lived here you've no idea what high regard the Americans hold their military, every airport has announcements every 5 minutes welcoming members of the armed services and letting them know where their private lounge is, airports here are full of soliders in combat uniform. Every truck has posters on the side thanking them for their service, every building has them too. Bit odd that almost all of DC's 12,000 homeless people are ex military though, guess the thanks didn't reach them Wink...but i digress Wink

I don't know, some of the graphics are pretty cool if you dont take them too seriously that is. Really not so keen on the crayola bullets though, quirky but in a bad way for me. Branding is very hardcore military, the forces speak gets tiring after a while on their website, but i get it.

I really like the look of the hoodies though. Quite fancy one of those.

Are they using the Omatic moulds or something?

Agreed the graphics are marmite... but i'm sure there are plenty of people out there who would dig it!

just looks like another cookie cutter brand to me, only in this case Lefebers decided to give them an editorial instead of a slating....

Matt- from what I can gather they are using B.S Tech which omatic patented ( extr-txtr/celebrity) I can't see any 'like for like' boards the nearest to the extr-txtr has bi-glass not tri-glass ( could be cost cutting?) I think they just have the licence to use the patent for it rather than a rebranded take over. I would happily buy a omatic made by some one else if I knew it was made as well. Shame about the graphics- I did'nt mind them as I though it was a piss take not that they really liked the US Army!!

Not as Military-bumming as i figured - i was expecting greens, US military stars, short back and sides, cheap cigars and starts and stripes!

Pleasantly surprised by them, ill be interested to see where they go!

The graphics aren't that bad - I've certainly seen worse by other established brands that I wouldn't be tempted to buy. It's only really the 'Rounds' board with the crayon bullets that lets the rest of them down.
And you've got to admit trying to appeal to military personal, plane spotters, gun nuts et all is a clever marketing move - there's certainly a lot of them out there (well, in the States anyway.) Certainly better than the wresting/MMA boards someone else's come out with.

Personally i really dislike designs like the really busy/lots of detail of the libtecs/capita/lobster/etc etc - i really like clean, crisp almost block colours - Bataleon is hit and miss for me, but things like the Salomon boards are just right - other than the Sanchez and stuff like that, i really like the mix of shapes and simple designs.

These Echelon boards are alright - i wouldn't get one i dont think, but i think the idea of the crayola-bullets is clever - links to child soldiers and all that - but im not sure it will be appreciated as much on a snowboard as it would at some thought-provoking arty-bullcrap art exhibition

If a board is made by military people I want it to be bulletproof and usable as a shield.

Graphic preferences are very, very personal but I would be interested to hear what any serving or ex military think? In the past we have supplied gear to various military snowboard teams and, without exception, they always steer clear of anything with a military theme - eg they say 'no' to snow camo snowboard bags, 'no' to Bern helmets in Bern green and 'no' to anything which makes any connection to their work - which seems fair enough to me.
