Ok heres something I dont think anybody mentioned..
Sometimes, just sometimes there is a reason a particular run is closed.. As i found out to my pain over in Breckenridge this season.
It was the first pow we had seen on our 2 week hol (great hol but thats another story) wed got up early and pretty much tracked out an area under 6 chair while we were waiting for the imperial chair to open. When it did all we wanted to hit the face under the chair as wed been doing under six but when we reached the top the face was closed.. Dropping down the piste abit we could see everyone ducking under the rope to get the freshies. When everyones doing it its really hard not to.. "Powder is more addictive than crack" So we ducked under the rope and headed down the virgin face.. I followed pocket. Then we realised why it was closed.. The base was non existant and sharp rocks were everywhere. I quickly re evaluated hitting the fresh stuff and headed for pockets track thinking ill see the rocks coming in his track.. Wrong.. pocket hit a rock and caught him up, hit the rock and skidded to but check on a rock.. not good a nice bruise and a ripped pair of expensive pants later and a half day wasted changing my pants.. Sometimes its just not good to duck under barriers. |

Something that has not been mentioned yet is choice of binding. If you are keen on spending time in any decent depth of powder avoid using flow bindings or any other sort that you cant just reach down unclip and lift your foot up and out. That is of course unless you never fall over/never need to paddle in which case there great. |

Hi All,
The one advice that changed my riding style forever, which sounds simple is to bend those knees!
When I thought I was bending them, a professional snowboarder friend of mine said to bend them to the point of croutching. It burns your quads like crazy if you are not used to it but it makes turning in powder way easier and more satisfying.
Happy new year to everyone!

yeah man, it totally changes how easy it is to ride the pow, all the hidden bumps & mounds etc, have a good bend and just straightline it, nothing beats the feeling of going crazy fast with snow flying all over the shop around ya |

Have to agree on that, it was one of the advantages I found with learning to ski first, on a skateboard or surfboard I tend to bend my knees but this is a bit different.
Also I am not sure about the use of ski poles on powder, I had one go down to the handle before, well at least it wasn't my hand I suppose. |
