Hi all,

Im having real trouble getting over my fear of catching an edge on boxes. I have a bad experience with a bibby which left me a bit cautious.

After i had my board serviced with snow and rock, it has left me with no cofidence in it aswell as the edges just seem that little sharper. Is it just in my head or would detuning my boards edges result in it being catch free?

Not catch free but it will help. Only one way to get over the fear and that its to do.

I've got a jib board with de-tuned edges and I still catch an edge every now and again, As Dashie says all you can do is man up really, Just make your on your run up to the box your centred and coming in straight and if your not just serve round the box and try again, Plus its all part of the fun of freestyling having the odd fall and denting yourself Smile

Detuning is just blunting the edges a bit around the nose and tail areas, it wont stop you catching an edge in the middle of the board during a board slide. You can file the entire boards edges down which is what many rail riders do but good luck turning the board on piste if you do that.

Balls, I was planning on smashing off all my edges on my artifact...which is this summers jib/dome snowboard.

Now you got me second guessing, how much luck to skill ratio required!

Also I think bibby's are more scary than boxes...the sound they make don't help either.

Not if you keep your weight centered but if you lean forward it makes no difference if you have any edges at all, you'l still faceplant.

I hate bibby's, nearly took my face off on one. They are much worse for catching edges on than boxes, so don't let it put you off going on boxes.

If you land with your board flat on the surface then it doesn't matter what you're on, you won't catch an edge. I quite like bibby's after getting over being scared of smashing your face/knee/balls on them, it just requires confidence in landing flat.

Saying all that, they are not the thing to learn boardslides on since they are much easier to fall off. Get confident on boxes and you'll be fine on anything.

Euan managed to mangle himself good and proper on a gap on bibby at the scottish bash last year. Good few weeks off work with a leg like the elephant man too.

The sound is pretty cool though.

The skiiers get a great sound out of them.

Personally I hate them. I've never ridden one and looked good, always a look of absolute fear on my face follwed by sheer relief when I get off. I learnt to nose slide them and it was the single most painful experience of snowboarding ever.

Big, black, corrugated pipe.
