Hello
As some of you might be aware i was plannign to do a season in Mammoth but due to US immigration concerns i thought i would be better off polling you guys to see where you think the ultimate resort in the world is?
Anything goes, i just want to know what you guys think is the best place to go to that you have visited. If you want to mention why that would be really useful!
My favourite place that i have been to is Ischgl in austria. Amazing park, great lifts and good snow but having now done about 8-9 weeks there i think i'm done. |

| I know in your other thread you said that you think it is too expensive, but the best place I've been to is Whistler. I spent a season over there, and it really is the best place I've been to for snowboarding. Huge amounts of terrain, excellent on and off piste, some of the best parks in the world catering for all abilities, friendly locals, awesome vibe, and great if you wanna stick around for the spring and summer seasons. Also, it was ace when I went in 2006, but would be even better now with the Symphony Chair and Peak2Peak gondy... |

| Thanks Ace. I really should give it more thought i just was put off by the price and how spread out it is. However i might have to give it more consideration. |

I'll echo my thoughts on your previous thread and say Mammoth is my favourite - that place is just awesome! If you do find a way to get there you certainly won't regret it. After that I would say Kirkwood is my next favourite and then probably Whistler. As you can tell I am defintely a fan of going across the pond. Not everyone likes the US/Canadian way of doing winter sports, but I would personally head across the Atlantic for every boarding holiday if it was practical.
That being said however, if you were going to ask me for an ultimate boarding destination, then my dream would be to do heli-boarding on the volcanoes in Kamchatka. Somehow I don't think you'll be looking to go there to work though
For slighty more realistic destinations, Jackson Hole, Vail and Japan are high on my list at the moment - eyeing up Jackson as a possible for next year if we don't go back to Mammoth. |

Travis has access to a heli, unless you have that all season in AK, I would say that doing a season there is a horrible idea. The climate is awful.
Add to the fact that AK is a US state, and the reason that the OP is looking for ideas because he doesn't want to deal with US immigration, pretty average advice really. |

I hate to say it but Mammoth is amazing, before i came here Tignes was always my favorite resort with Whistler a close second, but Mammoth P**ses all over them both!! Helps that its still got full snow coverage even this time of year, 63 cms in the last 72 hours, 16 degrees and completely deserted. Like we rode the same off piste tree lap for 4 hours without seeing a single other person apart from the lifty. And it's open till the end of june.
Sorry |

I've never been to Mammoth, but Nick you have seen nothing what Whistler has to offer so not sure you can compare it to anything fairly.
When you come back this month you will have empty slopes and lift lines. |

Although I probably haven't seen all that Whistler has to offer either, I have to say that I agree with Nick on this one. Mammoth does really p**s all over the opposition!
Not that I am knocking Whistler though - it is also an absolutely fantastic place, and may ultimately be a more viable option for a season for the OP!
Nick - glad you enjoyed it! How did you get on with the chutes at the top? |

Thanks for the posts guys really appreciated.
AK does look awesome but i want a little more structure to my time and unfortunetly i reckon AK wouldn't be what i was looking for, thanks though.
As for Mammoth vs Whistler, well it looks like it is coming down to these two. Don't apologise for posting about Mammoth, i could still go there but if it does come down to these two it will be a choice between:
- a full season in Whistler getting a job
- 3-6 months (depending on visa) in Mammoth no job
I don't actually need to get a job but i thought it might be better for meeting people and riding buddies but is this an issue?
In Mammoth i would of course not be able to get a job and would probably arrive in Feb to enjoy the Spring boarding so would i be a billy no mates for sure? Would i find accomodation at this time?
Also, bit silly but seen as both have great snow, great parks and good lifts can anyone say which has the more tree runs? I love piste lined with trees and i know Whistler has it's fair share but what about Mammoth?
Thanks for all of your help. |

I think one interesting thing on Whistler's website is this:
http://media.intrawest.com/whistler/fla ... mpare.html
If you compare Whistler with Mammoth, the big WB is way way way bigger than Mammoth. I think that's the only thing that really separates the two - amazing parks, awesome steeps, wide open bowls, tight trees, cliff lines etc etc.
I guess Mammoth is kind of in the sticks, so you get less weekend traffic showing up, whereas weekends are a little busier in Whistler because the Van residents head up there. But I was there from December till August, and other than epic powder days at Peak, Harmony and Seventh Heaven, I never really saw huge lift line ups. Once you're into March I barely had to queue at a lift, and all the way through March, April, May and June you could do straight runs through the park with no stops in between features to wait your turn like so many other resorts! |

Hey Ace, that last paragraph ar eyou refering to Whistler or Mammoth when you mention the park laps? One thing i hated about my last holiday was the queues in the park waiting for features only for locals to butt in as they "own" the moutain.
I guess i should know becayse you say Peak, Harmony and Seventh Heaven which i think are Whilster but just checking. |

There are absolutely loads of tree runs at Mammoth. We spent pretty much all of our 2nd day in the trees as the weather and didn't get close to covering all the tree-lined runs! You'll find this is one of the major differences between Europe and North America - the tree line is about 3000 feet higher in North America at up around 9500ft, so the vast majority of areas will have ample tree runs. Makes for great spring boarding as you get the smell of the pines as you speed through. Check out the Mammoth trail map and you'll see.
Accomodation should be easy for you to find in Mammoth in the spring and in-resort prices for food, drink etc is cheaper than Whistler so I would imagine costs would be cheaper for accomodation as well. Don't quote me on that though.
And yes, you probably will be Billy-no mates! We never had to queue for a lift when we there and you were unlucky if you saw more than 10 people on one run (I'll have a GoPro vid up later in the year when I get round to editing it so you can see!) And if does happen to get busy, your pass covers you for June Mountain (20 minutes away) which apparently is even quieter!!
As I said earlier, don't discount Whistler though - also a seriously awesome place! |

Cool thanks Rob, great help.
it seems like as resorts both of them are top notch and you can't really have a bad time at either!
Hmm decisions, i guess it depends on whether i want to do the whole season thing and get a job etc or if i can find anyone else to go with and just bum it at Mammoth!
Still i guess it is a nice decision to have |

Yeah, it was Whistler where I was doing clear laps. I hate waiting around for features, not least cos I'm crap and its always an anti-climax when you wait for 5 minutes, only to then fall over in front of everyone! Such a good feeling - off the chair, through the pipe, kicker, kicker, box, box, kicker, kicker, side hits on run down to chair, on chair, repeat to fade... |
