I always thought of buying an A3 printer, so, is it worth it?

Every A3 printer ive ever used has been so temperamental, you might has well feed the sheets in one at a time! That said, schools and colleges never have the very best equipment do they? Razz

If you want to make a lot of your own prints then, yes, get an A3 printer as it gives a lot more scope - A4 is actually a pretty small size format. I've got an Epson R2880 and it's the absolute mutts nutts. The B&W prints it produces are superb + it has a roll feed so you can print infinitely long panoramas! It's been superceded by a new model now so you might be able to pick one up cheap - they retailed over £500 when new.

Having a pretty bad day today (understatement), but a little happening earlier made it a bit more bearable

Was walking to a friends house through student village and saw this lil' guy just having a nap on the grass, took the picture with a 70-210mm manual lens i bought off eBay for £16

Excellent! I do love foxes.
Nice pic too. Pretty sharp for a £16 lens!

Hiya one and all, its been a while.

I'm finally going to lay some cash down and get an external flash for my EOS 600d. My plan is to buy the Canon Speedlite 430EX II but I wanted to check with those much more in the game then myself whether this is still a good place to start for sub £200 or has something blitzed it? Also does anyone know if Canon has a replacement in the pipeline?

Cheers

You might be able to pick up a 580EX for a bargain since they've just brought out the 600EX. Also, Metz have some excellent ETTL-II compatible flashes which are a lot cheaper than the Canon ones.

Hey guys,

I'm a complete noob to DSLR but I'm about to jump into it and make my first purchase. I've done some reading around but it's mainly been focused around Canon tbh, and I'm thinking 550 / 600 with the standard kit lense at first and then see how I go

Before I spend any money I just wanted to get some opinions from you wise old sages of the camera world:

1 - Is the EOS 550 or 600 a good camera to begin with, or would you recommend any others?

2 - Buying a used camera off the 'bay....sensible idea to save money or utter foolishness?

3 - I'm not planning on spending on a bunch of extras at first as I'd rather become competent with the camera first and then decide what toys I need...is this a smart way to begin or are there any essentials I should really think about buying?

4 - Would be really good if you had any recommendations for good resources to read

I've been taking photos for a while with point n clicks, and I've wanted a DSLR for a couple of years but was worried it would just gather dust - I'm definitely at beginner level though so any advice is definitely appreciated.

Cheers Smile

1) Yes probably, I started on DSLR with a 400D (from film SLRs) and it stood in me in good stead.

2) You can get a good used deal off ebay. There are two important questions though: How many shutter actuations has it had, avoid anything over 40,000 and that's the maximum you want to consider on a non pro body. The other question is how clean is the sensor? Are they seeing dark spots in photos of clear skies? If so then they have a dirty sensor.

You might be better off buying secondhand from a dealer since they often give them a warranty. Try www.mifsuds.com or http://www.mpbphotographic.co.uk or http://www.lcegroup.co.uk/

3) Just get used to the camera and a lens at first, make sure you get it off the green square and onto aperture or shutter priority and most definitely manual mode. After you've been using it a while it'll become apparent what extras you might want. People get bogged down with buying gear thinking it'll make them a better photographer when in fact the just need to learn to get the best out of what they've got... the same as snowboarding Wink

Taking the picture is just the first bit, you need to learn how to process your files to get the best out of them too. So learn how to use something like Lightroom or Photoshop Elements.

4) This one I'm not so good at since it's been a while since I first picked up a manual camera. Your first port of call should be understanding exposure and how you can manipulate your camera settings, a quick search found this http://photo.net/learn/basic-photo-tips ... speed-iso/

You will be able to find answers to almost any questions just by googling it and I find flickr good for picking out individual styles and replicating them. A quick look on amazon dug up a loads of books on technique and composition.

As ever good advice from Charlie and I'm not sure I can add much.

In terms of resources for learning. Before the internet was so widely used I learnt most of what I know from reading magazines such as Amateur Photographer. Yes, you can find all the same info online nowadays, and I'd certainly recommend that you use all and every online resource you can find, but sometimes it can be hard to know what you want to know - if you know what I mean Wink

Magazines are good as they bring the info to you. Having readers' questions, project suggestions, and tutorials placed in front of you in 'black and white' helps to focus your thoughts and structure your learning to an extent.

Once you find the magazines to be repeating themselves you know it's time to move on. Either to the more advanced magazines such as Advanced Photographer, Professional Photographer, and Photo Pro, or by then you'll have more of an idea what areas you need to improve and can make better use of t'internet.

As ever, I'm sure forums can be a helpful resource too, but there's so many out there and they suffer the same problems all forums do, namely constant bickering and disagreements, so it can be difficult to sift out the good quality, accurate information.

If you're a complete beginner then I'd get a book of some sort to teach you the basics of shutter speeds, apertures, ISO, depth of field etc.
Focal Press publish a load of great photograpy books and I've found Basic Photography by Michael Langford to be very good. It's a bit of a text book, and I think is used as a text book in photography courses, but it covers all the info you'll need to get started and more, and if you're really interested in advancing your photography you'll likely find it quite interesting and helpful to dip into when you want to check something.

Oh, and you'll never go too far wrong with a Canon camera Smile

Oh, forgot to ask....is there actually any difference between the EOS600D and the Rebel T3i? It's seeming like the US version is coming in reasonably cheaper, but I'm concerned it may be different spec or potential warantee issues...
