Post subject: Help please - Mac or normal laptop?

Hi guys, please can I have your thoughts, I need a new laptop do I buy a normal one or go for the more expensive mac option?
I mainly go on the Internet, use office applications and iTunes.
Is it worth paying the extra for a mac?
Any suggestions on which mac or laptop is a good buy that will last a few years?
I am not very teccy so want something easy to use, preferable with built in anti virus, had a mare with this on my last one!!
Any advise or suggestions welcome.

I don't have a set budget, I know the macs are about £1400 so I suppose no more than that.
I don't mind spending that much as long as it will last. The last laptop I bought I paid about £700 and it's only lasted about 3/4 years and now it's running so slow.
As i am not very teccy i would rather one with built in antivirus so I don't have to worry about that.
Other than that I am open to any suggestions.

The Dell XPS laptops are pretty decent.
In terms of running slow, almost any computer/laptop/mac that you buy will eventually start running slow once you've stored years worth of stuff on it.
The macs are also a good option, plus they look much better
Personally I'd either go for a Macbook, or a higher end Dell XPS laptop. |

To be honest, if you bought it 3/4 a year ago, and its running slow, just sounds like it needs a tidy up etc. Defrag and all that jazz, may well speed it up. Save yourself £700+ you could spend on a last minuet boarding holiday.
Chances are, the new one would do the same too in a few months. Do you have much software installed and when you install things do you click yes to everything? chances are you have about a million search bars on internet explorer? Try backing up all your music, pictures and important files and re-setting the PC, getting decent anti-spyware and anti-virus on (which you can get for free online) and see how that works. External HDD you can get for about £50. |

I would say Mac, because that's what I have. They're pretty and they work. They don't need anti-virus and they work. They don't need a de-frag and they work. They don't slow down the second you add a program to it and they work.
I wouldn't go near a PC again with my own personal cash money. I've had my iMac (regret not getting a MacBook pro) for two years and it's never crashed, unlike my PC that crashed and froze on a regular basis.
Of course all the PC lovers will come and tell you information to the contrary, but there's a reason Mac are more expensive. Plus, if you're near an Apple store, you'll get better after care then if you buy a PC online or at PC World. |

Macs DO crash and Macs DO get viruses.
Macs are more expensive because people are happy to pay more money for something with an Apple logo on.
Same with a Rolex, for example. The Rolex essentially does the same job as a £20 watch from Argos, yet people are happy to pay a thousand times more for it, simply because it's a Rolex.
I'm not here to start a PC vs Mac war, I'm just pointing out facts.
Personally, I like both Macs & PC's and I use both on a regular basis, and I would probably admit that I prefer the Macs, but that's mostly because they look 10 times better, and the OSX runs quicker than Windows. |

| Ok I know have actual evidence to base this on but they say that Macs are great if you do a lot of graphic editing work etc, but if that's not primarily what you need it for then personally I'd go for a Windows one. Well unless you have a great deal of money to waste.. |

Looking at your requirement spec, you've got no need for a mac otherwise it would just be a...
If you're doing any sort of photography/video editing work, they're amazing. You've also got the option of running bootcamp or vmware on them, so you can use Windows based applications. However if you don't have a need for those sort of things, then you'll pick up a pretty decent laptop for below £500. |

I'm sure there's a mac out there that's crashed. And maybe one has a virus too... But it's uncommon. When compared to Windows based PC's, it's almost unheard of, which was my point.
And the Apple logo signifies Quality. You pay more for that quality, not just for the logo. The Rolex analogy isn't a great one. My Audi is much more reliable than my Citroen. Coincidence, or is it because the quality is better? Sure it's three times more expensive, but the Citroen is always in the garage, the Audi hasn't been in once yet. Same applies here.
Anyway, sure you could get a PC and have no issues with it, but you're less likely with a mac, and more likely to get the support you need if you do have issues. |

| You'll also pay a disproportionate amount of money for that privilege... Macs are good if you're a graphic designer/photographer/film maker but you can still do everything to the same standard for half the price on a PC. If you are just going to use the internet, iTunes and Office then you don't need a Mac unless you like to pose, have more money than sense or you're computer illiterate enough to allow viruses onto your system which it seems a lot of people are... |
