I want to step up my game in the park and start straight airing black jumps, but I have a common problem. I don't come from a freestyle background so the only time I get air is my 2 holidays a year, and I get limited time in the park. I'm not used to getting a lot of air and when I do i'm not very composed. I'll do a short grab, but then start waving my arms like i'm directing 300kph traffic. A lot of the time I don't realise i'm doing this, I just see it on horrendous videos (and get ridiculed by mates).
I've been landing reds of all sizes for ages now, but on the bigger ones I have the windmill problem and don't want to hit (another) black until i've sorted it. Can anyone give me some advice. Is it technique or just fear that causing this?
Cheers

Id say it is fear mainly, look at total wipeout, they nearly all get fired into the air and windmill wildly. I wouldnt recommend this now but when I was younger I got told I did this (windmilling) when I used to skate (blades not board) so I went through a stage of riding with my hands in my pockets during tricks etc after a while my body kind of learnt not to do it anymore.
A safer version I would say is point your leading arm out and tweek the sh1t out of a grab. really boning it out will make it look nicer and as your concentrating on your arms hopfully it will stop them flaling around. I still sometimes do it if i dont hit the kicker correctly or find i got too much air but so do the pro's |

I hate black jumps or pro line kickers, mainly because i've always got more composure if I spin off a kicker and I dont have the bollocks to spin off a 15m+ kicker.
i've got the same problem as you though, i'm determined to hit them this season so i'm essentially hitting the reds and smaller blacks with more and more speed until i'm clearing that same distance anyway.
every little issue is magnified with the bigger kickers though, its scary |

oh yeah, technique....flat base, straight line from drop in point and stay centred and low until popping.....but i guess you know all that already
i get jealous of skiiers on bigger kickers, staying balanced on the run in is much easier for them |

I love total wipeout! Brilliant mindless TV. With the arm waving, I figured it was more a person's body trying to right itself (like when you cycle your arms backward when falling forward) rather than fear, but I guess it could be both.
Cantridepete, good luck on the big booters mate. I know what you mean about about skiers, they seem to be able to go big so easily. I know several that were straight airing pro lines before they could do 1's or 3's.
I think one needs motivation when going for these things, like a mate hitting them first. My motivation is that a kid I rode with a few weeks ago just posted a video of him doing a huge method off the big DC kicker in Meribel. They guy still rudders his turns! If he can man up surely I can. |

yeah, i think it does come down to just manning up really, you just need to make sure that you have the speed so if you do bail its on the transition not the table top.
coming up short on big kicker is a bit like jumping off a building and cuts your day short everytime! |

| probably a bit of both, its harder to stay stable the longer you stay in the air, you need to make sure your take off is spot on. its a confidence thing though, once you get to know the run in, kicker and landing itll get a lot easier. theres no magical way to jump blacks, same applies! |

yeah, nose grabs are my safety grab, mainly cos i find it keeps me on a nice flat base and in line on the run in
giving it a bash in the morning (when its nice and icy, its the only time i can get up tomorrow!) |

ok well managed to hit the proline for the first time this afternoon, hit it twice, the first time didnt quite have enough speed so popped as much as I could, had perfect composure in the air but caught the knuckle, the second time i had a lot more speed but was caught out a little by the whippy transition which meant i didnt pop and lost a bit of composure.. Still landed and rode away alive though.
confident of getting it spot on next time though
so anyway, moral of the story....POP!! |

Haha, Nice one
Don't think I'll ever have the balls to try a pro line. Even straight airs. |

you say that but i've gotta say i didnt really, not before hitting them in L2A this past summer. I'm quite lucky in that there's a red kicker at my local slope that you can hit with all sorts of amount of speed, its got a huge transition on the backside that once your about 2/3rds of the way down its exactly the same as the booter' knuckle. I just kept hitting that until it was comfortable.
Hoping to get the missus to do a bit of camera work this weekend, although we've only got a crappy flip so its not gona be good :sigh |
