#1 Topic:  To rocker or not to rocker?
Posted 17 September 2010 - 6:14pm on Freeski Club UK
Hi everyone. I'd just about convinced myself to get a Salomon Ace 153 (my sensible, value for money choice) but I'm intrigued by the idea of rocker boards and the Rome Garage Rocker in particular (I'm a sucker for the graphics).

I'm generally riding groomers, looking for kickers and stashes of powder at the sides. I'd quite like to improve ground tricks and jumps, although I'm not really so interested in doing rails and boxes.

Am I mad to be even considering a rocker board? Any reviews I've read suggest that the Rome is great for powder and tricks, but what's it going to be like on regular pistes and ice?

I'm 5'10" and about 11.5 stone, with size 9.5 feet if that helps.

Any thoughts or advice appreciated!

you really need to try it out, some love them some hate them. Generally people seem to find them better at slow speeds and in pow but not so good at fast speeds and hard packed piste.

Nowt wrong with a rocker, i have a regular camber and a rocker. Have to agree that the rocker is better a slower speeds.

The garage rocker is super soft, you'll have fun jibing around on it as long as u dont wanna pick up too much pace on piste.

Pretty sure i saw them in tsa, get your self in for a demo

try both at the same time Smile . Rocker and camber. I personally love it. Price is the main issue but worth trying while you are out demoing boards.

Never summer do rockers/camber

Burton's flying V

Nitro's gullwing

all great bases.

Another great option to consider is Ride and K2 boards. Both are totally flat between your feet and rockered only at the nose and tail.

A reverse camber board doesn't give the same response coming out of higher speed turns on piste. Towards the end of the turn when you unload the board, a traditional camber board will then release its energy you created going into the turn, which you can use going into the next turn.

My Banana board doesn't do that.

Some companies have released double-rockered boards to try to get around the problem (I think Burton call it V-rocker).

The V rocker is a standard banana type rocker. The Flying V is the is the rocker and camber.

It does really work though!! best of both world.

We test dozens of boards at the UK snowboard test in May every year. The rockers cambers are my personal favorites but very closely followed by the flat base between your feet that K2 and Ride do.

The flat centre gives you the control and stability of a standard camber board, and the slight rockered nose and tail give you the playfulness and ease of riding of a reverse camber board, plus wake style riding in powder.

I love inverse camber boards. (I've had a Park Pickle and now an APO Selekta) Just make riding flat so much easier. Also on the Pickle due to the magna traction edges it was way more grippy than an cambered board anyway.
On the APO I don't find the lack of edge hold to be a problem too often. Sometime's Ill slip out when doing a really hard snow spray/slash on piste. But, in normal riding haven't had any major problems yet.

However, I find rocker boards like bataleon (Had an evil twin) to not have enough edge hold. When I spin anything on kicks I just keep spinning on the way out. Razz

Bataleon do have a rockered board, its called 'the rocker'
In my opinion i would try one of the dual camber boards with rocker between the bindings and regular camber outside. It really is the best of both worlds.
I have rode a Never Summer SLR 58 for the past few years and it really can do anything, if i'm just jibbing and playing about it feels like a 55, but hit some pow and start charging and all of a sudden its like a 61.
Edge control is epic, with their vario sidecut once your on your edge you are locked in. With the camber on the nose and tail you still keep great pop.

Yeah i hate to think how many people will buy one thinking its a rocker and not getting the joke. I hate even more to think how many people wont even notice the difference and rave about how great rockers are ;)

Thanks for all the feedback guys. It sounds like "try before you buy" is the key phrase here. Unfortunately for me I live in Northern Ireland and we have no snow domes on the whole freakin island. Seriously, none. So I'm gonna have to play it a bit safer. Not sure I like the sound of having to go slow either ;)

I'm intrigued by Born Extreme's suggestion about the K2 and Ride boards with the flat camber in the middle. Has anyone tried the new Ride Agenda?

Capita boards have flat kick which is flat between the bindings and then reverse camber nose and tail. I've got a horrorscope and love it
