Just because Sidge keeps answering questions about topics he doesn't have a clue about, like answeing a Mac question. Guess he will never be able to affoard a Mac in his whole life so keeps winging about it.
About the iPad, I think is a bloody good idea, sort of captures the public imagination because it is the first computer for normal people instead of geeks. So if you are a bearded geek who buys a PC in the 199 shop and expends rest of the life trying to shoe horn it to try to do something useful will never get the iPad. I been there and saw the light eventually but I still have to put up of Geeking as I am a Video Firmware Linux developer in my day job. I won't go in details to explain why a Mac is better for video now, that is part of may day job
So, depends what u want. If u want to get online and run some apps and games on a secondary device get the iPad. If you want a descent media server to put under the telly or a cheaper mac to put under a descent monitor get the Mac-Mini.
Ah, I have the 1st gen Mac-Mini, got a 3rd party IR receiver (it was the one before built in remote) and works very nicely on my telly and also use it as test web server for my web development at home. I haven't got an iPad yet, I promissed myself to get the 2nd gen and also wait until my 6 year old PowerBook dies.
i do love the mac mini styling but i wouldnt buy one because there over priced but then thats because i know what im doing.
hubby already has an ipad, so i know what it's like to use (more importantly, so does he!) and it's what helped me convince him to look at mac - he was VERY anti-mac before. but...
ipad is a gadget. it's not a full-blown laptop. we're not using it as a laptop, and don't intend to, as we have a laptop for that purpose. we're using it for the gadget it is - easy to use on a daily commute as a web browser/mail reader/book reader (yes, a very expensive book reader)/music player/etc. we can use it on the sofa whilst watching telly to look up stuff we want to know more about. geeky? yes, but this time it's "sexy mac" geeky
anyway, if we wanted to use it as more of a laptop, we could pay whatever the going rate is for an "ms office" type app. but when you have a few computers in the household that already have paid up versions of the full software, why the bloody hell would we?
the ipad has built-in readers that allow you to edit docs and email them (i think, i've not had reason to use this functionality yet). i don't know how you save them onto the ipad. again this is not important to us as we don't use it for that reason.
does this clarify anything for those wondering what the ipad is, or what it can be used for?
a small point - you need to be able to connect to a computer (mac or pc) to sync the ipad for your music/movies/photos,so your base pc would need to have decent storage if you're planning on syncing e.g. 16gb of data. you also need an itunes account.
I'm not a 'PC 'Fanboy', i like my iPhone, and have said in various discussions the laptops that Apple do are pretty nice, I just don't think that their mac mini/mac pro line are very good for the average consumer.
So don't get all twattish with me just because my opinion differs from yours, thanks.

I'm dusting off my Amiga A500 (ok 512kb but close enough) as we speak, lets see how it handles You tube

Sidge, if there was a dictionary entry for 'PC fanboi' I swear it'd have a picture of you next to the description.
Anyway, not had a go with the iPad yet but just ordered a few in work to play with. I think it definitely fills that 'browsing on the sofa and checking a few e-mails' role exceptionally well, and I think it would be perfect for sherlock if that's the sort of thing she's after. Overpriced for what it is, absolutely, but then so are loads of things and I still buy them.
The iPad reminds me of my 10 year old Psion Netbook in terms of user experience, a machine that just works, responsive as hell and no management required and you forget its is a "computer". ( Suppose I should dust off my netbook out as it is a great machine for typing text and taking notes, considering I expent £700 on it back then! )
call me cynical, but i'm wary until something goes wrong and dell have to sort it out. then my hate of dell will be vindicated, or i'll continue to look like the fool i am. kit kat it will all be ok.
it's got so many whistles and bells, i'm still trying to find them all (joke). i'm willing to give windows another go cos as my husband pointed out - i've never actually had a decent windows machine. if i did, maybe i wouldn't hate windows so much.
ding! ding! round 15(?!)

We have a number Dell laptops in work on 3yr NBD, and the handful of times we've had to use it they've come next day as promised and fixed the issue within about half and hour. We've had a screen go, usb ports go and a dodgy key here and there (which actually they just send out a replacement keyboard for and one of the lads put it in).
I remember using them years ago for server support and they were sh1te, but I think they've picked up their game a bit these days.
