I'm fairly well paid and think I'm actually quite good at what I do, the company I work for are OK and have looked after me over the years but I just can't say that I really enjoy work!
So the question is do people actually enjoy their jobs or is it just a necessary evil that we accept is needed to pay the bills and fund our trips to the mountains each year?
Not that I'm planning on walking out tomorrow or anything (so I guess it can't be that bad!). Just thought I'd put it out there and see what the scukers say

but the plus sides are good can swerve work if kids are ill , have a holiday when I want, don't have to answer to anyone
But to answer your question it is a necessary evil lol and I do enjoy it when I'm working outside in the summer sunshine
and enjoy my current role ( SAP BASIS consultant )
the company is anoying but the only other option is contracting
which is more money but more pressure on me
so yeah enjoy the work, but the only good thing about working for a big company
is the ace pension and the paid holidays and sick
so yeah enjoy it but priddy much a necessary evil
I guess you could say I enjoy my job. The hours are great (8.00-16.30 and 8.00-13.00 on Fridays!), I get on very well with my workmates, it's only 5-10 drive from my apartment, I get a pretty decent salary, my boss is awesome and my work itself, I don't mind doing.
I think the best thing about this job is that I'm always learning which make it interesting. They do say that if you don't stimulate the mind then it's easy to get bored easily :-)

I think as tortyv mentioned before, most professions lose their enjoyment as soon as you start to rely on them for a living.

not so bad
work any days i want to, can come in at any time i want and leave early if i have things to do, can use my own laptop, come to the office in my pyjamas and work from home if i want to visit my parents, i even interviewed & hired someone to work in my own lil team the other week, pretty sweet
If you've been in he same job for 20 years and still like it then you're definitely doing something right!
Personally I think being in IT is great because things are always changing and as I mentioned before, you are always learning!
me dad is 50 now though and still enjoys his work
they also say physical work (haidresser, painter, plasterer, electrician, carpenter, plumber, builder) are more enjoyable in the long term as you actually get to see the fruits of your effort
IT is bullsh1t, i smash a bunch of keys and someone gives me money, who would have thunk it
Sometimes its awesome - on a lovely sunny strolling around some historic parkland checking for health and safety defects its wonderful, but when you're in a crappy building site knee deep in mud and freezing your bits off, or sitting in the office for days on end telling people how to build their garage safely its not quite so much fun...
Nice Photos
I have been a mechanic for over 27 years and still love it , i have been a race instructor also for over 14 years
And i have been messing with prperty about 7 years
All take alot of my time but , then it lets me do what i want when i want after that..

Cheers guys I guess there are ups & downs to all jobs, and I maybe in one of the downs at the moment. May also be a problem with the generally repetitive nature of accounting!
Though I have more recently been getting involved in some development work and using SQL a fair bit, which I'm finding more enjoyable (maybe it's just something different) so maybe I should find ways to pressure this more, or maybe combine the 2 somehow.
Sidget - you're very lucky, what do you actually do?
Well ill second that for sure lol
But...... I commute 2hrs each way, each day, so I guess there are always negatives. It's fair to say if I didn't have to work.... Like most people, I wouldn't. I would do so much more and see so much more of the world.
Just remember how many people can't get work or have worse jobs that don't allow them to enjoy their loves like snowboarding, surfing etc. that'll make u feel better about it all :-)
Are they looking for any staff at the moment???
My bread and butter is a job in IT as a system tester Mon-Friday and by night, I do a bit of pizza delivery 4 nights a week.
My 'proper' job pays the bills and what not.
My second job is a means of earning some 'play' money and thats pretty much what funds my boarding and other hobbies.
I hate my day job. Its fairly well paid, and thats kinda half the problem - I couldnt really walk out of it and in to another career on similar money........ and trust me, I need that money.
Its easy to say 'its not all about the money' - but when you've a mortgage and car and whatever else to pay for, it really is all about the money. Happiness and daydreams wont pay for those!
My second job I actually dont mind though - the pay is woeful (minimum wage), at times its pretty frantic (Fri / Sat nights / Edinburgh festival time etc), its significantly harder 'graft' than my day job............ But I enjoy it a whole lot more.
If only I could get paid my day job wage for doing my night job!!
I'd save up sh1tloads, go away for a season in Austria, then spend a few months in Sweden and then I'd be back to do a similar crappy temping job and bar work again. I repeated this for three years!
Just before I got made permanent in my current job (as SAP Support Specialist) I was still working every Sunday in the kitchen at the restaurant. I did kinda enjoy it, but it was just tiring and with all my karate / swimming and social life it was just too much. Now I have my weekends for ME.. which is awesome
I'm up at 5am, on a bus to the train station by 6am, on a train by half six to get me from Edinburgh to Glasgow in time to work an 8 till 4 shift. Finish in Glasgow at 4 and get off a train back in Edinburgh for 5:10, bus get me home at 5:30-5:40, then on the nights i'm working I start work at 6pm so literally back out the door again before working till 11pm...... home, dinner and in to bed normally for about midnight. 5 hours sleep then repeat!!!
I end up working Friday and Saturday nights which kinda sucks, but I always make sure I have my Sunday completely to myself - Sunday is my Erik Time haha, thats when I get to squeeze in boarding and karting and kayaking and whatever else! The rest of the time i'm just a walking zombie though haha!!
Like I say, the money is terrible - but its kinda a double whammy...... If i'm out earning £30 a night, then i'm not at home wasting £10-20 on munchies or passing time buying stuff on ebay or whatever else i'd end up doing if i were sat in the flat bored, so earning £30 can actually kinda leave me £50 better off if that makes sense?!
Its not ideal, but it does make a huge difference. The second job has basically already paid for my week in Tignes and a heap of new gear this year - that is stuff that i've previously had to do without when I was relying solely on my main job. Its gotten to the stage where i'd love to give it up - but I'd miss the extra cash waaaaaaay too much!! Only way I can see things changing is when I finally land myself a bird....... but then again, how the feck do I get a bird when I have zero free time to do so!! Catch 22 unfortunately!
Probably using a different reference than "bird" might help
I have to say, selling the house and renting has made our lives so much easier and cheaper, and being in the black makes us far more stress free and happier
It's often hard graft, sometimes there is a fair bit of downtime and looking for things to do; others it's non stop from 9-5 all depending on poeple and weather. I like money though so if a better paying job came along I think I would go for it unless it was in sales or something.
Performace sales killed part of me.
For a start I'm freelance so I never know when my next job is coming - it's generally word of mouth of occasionally from my agency. But when I do get work - I enjoy it and find it rewarding.
I work in TV so it's a nice idea that although I am a small cog in the grand scheme of things - I am an essential cog that helps things keep moving. My work also take me places. Like yesterday I was working on a beach on a beautiful day for a new music video coming out soon (artist isn't someone special and don't know if I'm allowed to say so always best to keep my mouth shut).
It can be very long hours - generally it's a 10 or 12 hour day that I would get booked for and there's travelling time on top of that. Some days can be 15-16 hours by the time I leave the house and get back. But it can be alot of fun and generally good banter as long as I'm doing my job properly. When sh1t hits the fan thought that's when this step up a notch.
So yes I would say I love my job.
Anyone know of any jobs in Glasgow, or anywhere in England or Scotland for that matter? I fancy moving again.
