I got the email saying they had made a mistake and had sent me the wrong documents as well. They really need to get their act together because they cant just send you knew documents with different terms after youve paid and signed . If they take your money and send you terms and conditions then they are the ones they have cover you for, no company can just say oops sorry we made a mistake and change a contract.

I wouldn't be surprised if they have small print in the contract about being able to change conditions if they need to. But they do need to sort themselves out and make sure that they have a set of conditions they can stick to, otherwise people aren't gonna know where they are.

Ok, so I just had a reply from them:

Quote:
Thank you for your email. This stipulation was noted as an error in the wording yesterday I am afraid. We are in the process of changing this part of it and please accept my apologies for this error.

The policy should state that you are covered off-piste provided you are accompanied and comply with local safety advice (basically as it was before).

The new policy wording will be available on SCUKs website as soon as we have corrected this. In the mean time, you can use this email as an endorsement confirming your cover for this activity.

In respect of the trip you took in January, we have not removed any cover from the old wording, only added to it so you do benefit from having the better cover. If you had made a claim for the trip in January, we would have honored the increased cover from the new wording.

I was worried that I wouldn't be covered by the new wording because I had taken a trip already, but this clears it up.

I would imagine based on this that anyone on the SCUK policy would only have to have 1 person with them to go off-piste, which is great news!!

And I applied for my SCUK policy yesterday (7th March) and it clearly states in the activities document "d) You are accompanied and you comply with local safety advice at all times". Thumbs Up

Yeah, that's why I emailed them yesterday and what the reply I got was referring to.

Looks like it's been changed since then. If you want something in writing then probably best to email them and get your own email that you can use "as an endorsement confirming your cover for this activity."

Yup, email them to get an endorsement email Nick! That's what my post with an email from them was about, but I guess I phrased it poorly!

Sorry, just got back from riding off piste in Japan with one other person!

It is less risky to ride in a party of 3 so we understand why the new underwriters have that clause. The standard policy says you must ride with a guide, so this is a SCUK special. It's also a significant change to the previous policy. The schedule says "accompanied", but the policy clarifies by saying "3 or more". It is confusing. If TGIC have changed it back then I'm very happy, but I will get this all confirmed. The other changes to the policy were all positive, so if we can get this issue resolved then it'll be the best SCUK policy yet. Give me a day or two.

Cheers Dunx. It does look like they've changed it back to only needing 2 people, which is good for your Japowing Smile

I can confirm that the NEW underwriters of the SCUK policy have agreed to use the same wording we had with the old underwriters.
"you are covered off-piste provided you are accompanied and comply with local safety advice."
Basically for the past few months I've been working with TGIC to explain to our new underwriters that whilst the 3 people clause makes sense (1 injuried, 1 to stay with the injured party, 1 to get help), just isn't always feasible.

I know they have just emailed out a policy update a few days ago but since that they have managed to secure the new wording which does back date to 1st January. I'm yet to receive the new policy document and was going to make an announcement on the news/forum about this but seems like some of you are hotly on this...

Bottom line is that here at SCUK (and TGIC) we understand more than any other insurer what snowboarders actually need and do everything we can to provide the best policy on the market and at an affordable rate.

If you are in doubt contact them direct with any questions.

regards
stu

To add to what Stu's said, the revised working has been sent by TGIC for approval by the policy's underwriters. From the tone, they are assuming it will be approved. Once it is, we'll get the new policy wording uploaded.

What's great about all of this is peoples' involvement. It's not often you get the chance to shape a product like this and was our aim from the outset - to create a policy to cover snowboarders for what snowboarders actually do.

Okay, all sorted. It's back down to a group of 2 and there's an extra specific exclusion been added to say you're not covered if off piste alone.

The new policy document is available for download at www.snowboardclub.co.uk/insurance (see page 19).

The revised terms cover any policy brought since 1st January 2011 for any trip you have not yet started.

Happy to help!

First off, apologies for reviving this thread!

I'm trying to answer a question thats been raised elsewhere where I've recommended this policy. I've had a search through the forum and read the policy document and cant see anywhere where this specific question is covered off, so rather than start another Insurance thread thought I'd ask here as its a similar (off piste) theme.

In the policy, its states that you are covered off piste:

"with a qualified instructor or in a group of not less than 2 persons in possession of working communications or portable telephone. No cover for riding off-piste alone or winter sports activities against local authority advice."

And the question raised:

Local Authority Advice would generally state that to go off piste you should have a shovel, probe and transceiver. Thats fine and perfectly reasonable for what we'd all consider proper off piste.

However, between runs (in the trees for example) is technically off piste (though in North America generally "in bounds"). Would the SCUK insurance company wriggle out of a claim in that instance if you didn't have the avy kit on you?

Basically, does our policy expect you to have full avy kit if you break your leg in the 10 feet of "off piste" between runs if the local authority recommends it "off piste"?
