![]() Xscapeology
The second Xscapeology. Beats, beer and boarding.
Once again Xscape have got it spot on with Xscapeology. The slope was in top condition and the number of new hits on the slope was impressive. We chatted to Anderton who was the drive behind the new toys - a new C rail, new S rail and a new rainbow rail, plus all the little hits on the snowskate park. He said that he just put forward the ideas to the Xscape management and then ran with them. It's great to see them finally getting what snowboarding is about. In addition to the rails, the Big Mama was seeing some action and the boardercross course between the pillars saw a huge amount of action throughout the evening. In addition to a good number of boarders, there were also a few kick-ass freestyle skiers on the slope and that was great to see. What the guy on the squaw/monoski thing was up to was perhaps a little less unfathomable. There were no lessons held on the lesson slope as this was set aside for the snowskate park. Some lessons were held on the main slope before the event and that confused some people who thought the slope was closed for the evening. Once the lessons had finished the volume was turned up and I think that's a first for a boarding night. With the lights down low, there was a great atmosphere. Running from 7 to midnight meant the pace was a little more relaxed than the normal frantic get-as-many-runs-in-as-you-can four hour session. There was a great atmosphere on slope and for most of the night there was some great tunes, although the 10 minutes of full blast static was perhaps not so hot. That was soon sorted however and the on slope volume throughout the night was spot on. Down at "resort level" there was a BBQ and, if you could stand dining next to the speakers, a few picnic benches. The staff did a great job of just letting everybody get on with it. Many riders were popping their Big Mama cherries and braving rails for the first time. All the rails are single runners so not especially easy. Of them all the rainbow saw the most attention, with the S and C rails left for the more experienced. As regulars become more familiar with those, let's hope they see a bit more action as they looked well designed and perfectly do-able. Off the slope we had the usual Xscapeology vibes and breakdancing. I didn't catch the main event, but caught some warming up (and even had a go myself, much to their amusement) and was pretty impressed. The locals were out in force, but there was a definate split between the action on and off the slope. I only caught a few minutes of BMX flatland tricky stuff, but that looked cool too. Xscape needs more of these events. They don't even have to be that spectacular off-slope events in my opinion. Xscapeology shows what the slope can be like when the people who know what boarders want are given the support they need. As somebody said on the night "the management don't know what they've got here and we're just trying to show them". Hear! Hear! Let's see some of that stuff stay on the slope and see Xscape develop its boarding soul.
