![]() Xscapeology
To celebrate the launch of the Blackthorn Park, a big night called Xscapeology will be held at Xscape.
The Xscapeology event was to celebrate the launch of the new SnoPark at Xscape, sponsored by Blackthorn. The main attraction was a new table top, built by Richard Gillett from TSA under the direction of Rob Cuss. Although not as big as the AIM Series jump, this one does have one distinct advantage - it will be here all summer and Xscape plan to open it as often as possible. The jump is nice. Daunting to look at, but actually very rideable. There is a long tall booter, relatively short table top and a steep landing. The short table top means even average riders can make the landing and if Friday was anything to go by, they'll actually land it safely. There were no injuries on the night and when you fall you don't really feel it because of the slope. The labding is a little on the narrow side and people certainly came close to landing off the sheer edges of the landing slope, but anybody straight airing it should have no problems. Just remember what Christian Stevenson always says. Speed is your friend and you can't get hurt in the air. For the first few hours there were a handful of skiers out to. They were certainly mixing it up on the jump and it was good to see them. They held an impromptu comp on the jump at one stage. That was a little annoying to be honest as they tried to keep everybody else off the jump, shouted at people when they hit it anyway and then held the prize giving on top of the jump, rather than let people carry on using it. Perhaps it's just me being grumpy, but that wasn't mentioned on the flier and I was there to hit the jump not watch other people doing it. Also out for the night was an old Mercedes complete with a couple of shop dummies. That provided a jib or jump for those that didn't fancy the big jump. If you're a beginner to such things you could just ride over it. If you're more advanced then you could jump the thing or grind the roof or bonnet. The landing got a bit bombed and that would have done with some attention. No idea whether it will stay, but it was good fun. The two kinked rails remained, plus the sewerage pipe was back out. The three bar 42' rail has been run over by the piste basher, but that might get mended and will be back out if it is. They have no intention of putting anything on the other slope, to keep it clear for other things. They do intend to move the big jump over a bit to give a wider piste on the one side, but what we saw on Friday should hopefully be the SnoPark for much of the Summer. Elsewhere, the locals were in lapping up the DJs and there was a Blackthorn promo in the bar. It was all good and if the lights had been a bit lower on the slopes and the CD not churning out the same song for the last hour or so of the evening it would have been even better. The extended session went on to midnight, although at that time there were few left on the slope. Fatigue and beer claiming the majority of the rest. Played to those people who got it together and cheers to those we met on the night. A good night and we'll have some more if you'd be so good.
