Winter Games NZ
The world’s largest winter sports event outside of the Olympics, Winter Games NZ, today unveiled its confirmed programme of competition that will present over 800 elite athletes competing in 20 different disciplines of ice and snow sports in one of the Southern Alps’ most spectacular regions.
The Games will showcase the best of winter sports over the four international resorts of Coronet Peak, The Remarkable, Snow Farm and Cardrona within the picturesque Queenstown/Lake Wanaka region featuring alpine skiing, cross country skiing, snowboarding and free skiing and adaptive snow sports. The small town of Naseby in Central Otago, home of New Zealand curling, will host teams curling while the coastal city of Dunedin will be the venue for figure skating and ice hockey. Winter triathlon will also feature in the programme, but as a demonstration event. The programme has been designed to provide a strong representation for all sports, including adaptive snow sports, and to give athletes an opportunity to gain valuable competition experience in an elite environment prior to Vancouver in 2010. Spectators will have free access to all the events, including the opening and closing ceremonies while TV audiences around the globe will be able to enjoy the only winter sports event of this kind in the world. Winter Games NZ CEO, Arthur Klap, said building the programme had been a complex exercise but the support of the various national sporting bodies around the world, together with the FIS, had been exceptional. “We have a really strong programme that is going to give winter sports a significant boost in the lead up to the Olympics,” he said. “We’ve managed to get nearly all the sports we wanted to - our one disappointment is being unable to secure a short track speed skating World Cup. However, this has been replaced by two trans Tasman ice hockey test matches and there’s nothing like a bit of Australian/Kiwi rivalry to get the public fired up!” Snowboard EventsSunday 23rd August: Slopestyle at The Remarkables Wednesday 26th August: Boarder-X at Cardrona Thursday 27th August: Halfpipe at Cardrona Saturday 29th August: Big Air at Cardrona Sunday 30th August: Big Air at Coronet Peak The Winter Games NZ event page can be administered by dunx (Dunx), stu (Stu Brass), spencer (Spencer Claridge) and office (Office).
