Jamie Nicholls and Emily Richardson win the Von Zipper Trials 2006 Fourty-two eager eyed 12 - 19 year olds ventured to the Milton Keynes Xscape last Saturday to compete in the 3rd annual Von Zipper trials. The prize – a chance to compete at the Billabong World Junior Pros (Les Deux Alpes, 4th-5th March 2006). VZ have been touring 15 stages across Europe offering an amazing opportunity for the best youth riders to show off their talents on the slopes. The riders, which included five girls, went head to head in a series of heats, pulling tricks on kickers and rails in a fight to impress the judges, which included UK snowboarding legend and VZ rider Johnny Barr. 12 year old Jamie Nicholls (Bradford, West Yorkshire) and 16 year old Emily Richardson (Windlesham, Surrey) came first respectively in the men’s and women’s final after they blew away the judges with some gnarly tricks that rocked the slopes. Jamie and Emily now have the opportunity to battle against some of the world’s rawest talent at the Billabong World Junior Pro. [From VZ] On Thursday, and Friday nights, the Xscape SNO!zone shapers worked hard to create the park on the biggest slope of the resort: 2 rails, 2 fun-boxes, 1 tube, 1 rainbow, 1 kicker. On Saturday morning, everything was ready to welcome the riders. We were expecting to begin the competition around 10 am, but we couldn’t because of the number of riders. 42 riders from 10 to 19 would have to fight for the qualification for the Billabong Pro Jr. The competition started with 7 heats of 5 riders. During the 15 minutes of each heats we saw a lot of things: from slam to 540 tailgrab… The rider level wasn’t the mountain one, but our Johnny Barr (official judge) was stoked: “it’s the first time that I have had to judge a contest in the UK with such a high level”. The Final was mixing Boys and girls, but one boy and one girl would be qualified. The boys are Richard Campbell, Jamie Nicholls, Alex Nuthall, and the girls are Samantha Rogers, Emily Richardson. It lasted 15 minutes: the motivation was so big that we were feeling like we were in an international competition… The VZ Trails event page can be administered by dunx (Dunx), stu (Stu Brass), spencer (Spencer Claridge) and office (Office).
