Von Zipper Trials
The VonZipper trials is a European Tour to search for the next junior snowboarding champion (ages 12-19).
Twenty of the best amateur UK snowboarders, aged between 12 and 19, dominated the slopes at the Snozone in Milton Keynes, competing in the second annual VonZipper Trials. The VZ Trials 2005 is a European tour to find the freshest snowboarding talent in eight countries and offers the winner a qualifying ticket to enter the Billabong World Jr Pro (Les Deux Alpes, March 2005)!! This is THE place to get spotted by big brand sponsors and take your first jump towards becoming a pro rider… A slopestyle contest, all twenty competitors faced a series of hips and rails as they pushed each other through the heats and semis. The two judges, including Jonny Barr, one of VonZipper’s British pro Snowboarders, said that the standard was extremely impressive throughout, especially from the four final riders. 18-year-old Chris Chatt from Milton Keynes was declared the winner after demonstrating consistently impressive runs. Chris is truly making an impact on the UK’s amateur scene having achieved 1st and 2nd places in 2004 junior comps, such as the Orange Brits and Aim series and Burton’s Black Metal. He will be competing over the 4th and 5th March in Les Deux Alpes, France in the Billabong World Jr Pro. Rider's ReviewFollowing the success of last years Von Zipper Trials, Milton Keynes was yet again the venue hosting the only event in Europe dedicated to discovering junior talent. The trials quite rightly took up half of the Xscape. Okay, you would think that the only trials in Britain for 12-19 year olds, in which the winner wins a ticket to ride at the Billabong World Jr. Pro Competition in Les Deux Alpes (March of this year) would be absolutely packed with kids, yeah? Wrong! There were only twenty competitors, which meant that it was really anyone’s competition. The day started in a knock-out format of heats in which the best two of each heat of four went through to the semi's. Despite the lack of entrants, the riding level was first-class and was a definite reminder of the ever-improving level at which Britain’s young snowboarders are riding. This continued through the semi’s and into the finals which consisted of four riders each completing five equally important runs. The riders were; Tiny Tom Knox, Chris Chatt, Chris Knightly and Steve Revill. The riders, all with five equally dirt-free runs were going very huge on all the rails and the kicker (just what we like). At the end of the competition all of the riders were knackered and very happy with their performances. We all waited in the bar with baited (and alcohol) breath, impatient to find which lucky rider was going to the Alps. It turned out to be a good day for 18 year old Chris Chatt with his silky smooth street-style runs of front side 3’s, dutty back-lips/nose blunt things on the gap rail and backside 3’s off the infamous c-rail that won him the event. Big-ups to Von-Zipper for organising the event, Milton Keynes Xscape for hosting it and big up all the riders for an entertaining day. Splendidly cool fun. Review by Ben (chatterbox) Knox.
