The sight that greeted visitors to the show was an abundance of tents in the Tirol bar of the Snowdome. With all the major brands having a stand, and loads of equipment to gander at and boards to test, the people who made it along the traffic strewn M1 were spoilt for choice. As well as all the latest quality schmutter, there were seminars on various peripheral aspects to snowboarding. There was a demonstration on board tech and tuning from the guys at The Snowboard Klinik which was followed by an informative talk on Filming and Editing by Bad Ass Big Airs Director Tim Warwood. Tim’s talk covered technical aspects such as aperture, colour balance, music and loads more. The Snowboard Photography talk from Document’s Nathan Gallagher focused on tips about creative control over the image using depth of field, ways of removing the ‘guy in the sky’ image from your portfolio, and the role that colour plays in determining which image gets selected by those nasty ‘picture editors’. A backcountry and Avalanche Safety Talk from James Stentiford followed which everyone who spends time in the mountains should see, detailing essential equipment and practices that will help keep you alive in the harshest of mountain environments. Then there was an open forum for viewers to put questions to Stu Brass (SCUK, Soul Sports, AIM series, SnowsportGB, ex-pro snowboarder etc etc) and Jeremy Sladen (TSA and The Snowboard Show Organiser). All in all, the turn out to each of these seminars was excellent, and with up to 40 people in each one, a lot of questions were answered and people enlightened. Whilst this was going on in the Tirol Bar, the slope was being utilised all day, for people to try out new equipment, and with free coaching sessions from UK pros. Hamish McKnight and Chris Chatt, with the help of James Carr, were on hand to help anybody in the art of rail-riding, and Ash Newness was teaching some advanced riding techniques. With the Seminars and Coaching over, it was time for the UK premiere of Travis Parker and Andrew Crawford’s strange new movie, December. The film follows them travelling throughout Eastern Europe for the month of December, and catches them riding whatever is put in front of them. It goes to show how the creativity of a rider can make any location seem fun and inspiring! Unfortunately FutureProof was still on the press and they couldn’t get it over in time for the premier, but it be shown soon. From then on, it was a struggle to find a hotel for the night… they all seemed to be booked up with the elite of the UK snowboard industry, then get changed into the suits and tux’s for the UK Premiere of Bad Ass Big Airs at Tamworth UCI. This is TSA’s new film, and was put together by the boys at Lockdown Projects, Adam Gendle and Tim Warwood. Even with the high expectations from their previous offering, Proper, they didn’t disappoint. With plenty of free beers, and one of the biggest bags of popcorn I’ve ever witnessed, we sat down to watch it unfold. The atmosphere in the cinema was electric, with the entire crowd cheering and wincing, whooping and hollering in unison. Its hard to condense the film into highlights, but Gary Greenshields over Nico’s gap in Avoriaz, Tyler Chorlton’s 21+ (we lost count) frontflips, Si Brass’s storming section, an awesome and inspiring Iran section, and Johno Verity’s funniest scene in a Snowboard movie all stand out. Then we stumbled back to the Tirol bar for the after party. Ahnell's cleavage. Drunk. Stu bought £80 round of Sambuca. Olivia fell over. Didn’t stay in hotel. Made drunken ass of myself infront of a hot girl. Ate lots of Cheese. The End.
