Tamworth's 10th Anniversary Bash. Yes, believe it or not the SnowDome is 10 years old this year and they're gonna party like it's 1994!
Another great night at Tamworth Snowdome was had as we took our places in history for the UK's first proper indoor slope's 10th birthday. We even sang happy birthday at one stage. Our MC for the night was Tim Warwood and he kept the assembled 160 riders up for it, throwing down prizes for just about everything, especially old skool tricks. Tamworth's phones had been ringing all week apparently with offer upon offer of goodies for the event. Tim certainly had his work cut out. I went home with a VANS keyring, which was just about fitting for my boarding prowess on the night. I, like many others though, probably had an excuse. I was riding a Morrow Slick fiftytwo from about 1997 that hasn't been waxed for three years and some very fetching tight purple salopettes. Plenty of other people had also opted for the right and proper look for 1994. The slope was rammed, not just with boarders and a single skier from the ATV crew, but also with toys. The C rail made it debut, but quickly left after being dubbed the "U" rail. That will come back after a little more work, but opened up the way for the quarterpipe, which saw a series of drop-ins on boards and snowskates, which were also in abundance. Tamworth's fine bars were also crowded and a host of the UK's best riders seemed to be content propping up the bar and enjoying the DJ. Si Brass was there and I couldn't be sure whether he was "drunk again" or "drunk still". Hamish Duncan was doing his best to join in despite the recent broken back. Nice to see you guys supporting the event and leaving the slopes clear for us proper riders. At halftime, the ATV crew showed their Snowdome film and a teaser that will hopefully get released with Method Mag next season. Good work you guys. The grand finale was the Chinese downhill race, so we all went to the top, strapped in, sat down and waited for the off. As has been pointed out on the forum, the slope isn't really long enough for a downhill race, but when you're strapped in at the top of a 20m wide slope, with 100 or so other boarders, crammed five deep, knowing that just around the corner are two rails, three kickers, a gas pipe, assorted cameras and video equipment... and only one winner, it's quite daunting. On the day, a good man won, in the form of TSA's Simon Pardoe who walked away with a TSA goody bag. Serves him right. He probably cheated anyway ;) Check out the video (7mb avi) whilst you still can or a different video (2.7mb mpeg).
