How d’ya like the sound of a ‘learn to surf’ weekend with fellow SCUKers in Newquay from £76?

We are teaming up with the Animal Surf Academy to provide a weekend of surfing and merriment in deepest, darkest Cornwall. It’s our first year to do this, and as snow is indeed only frozen water, and many of us snowboard-riders also share a love for other boardsports, we figured it was well overdue to round up a posse of wannabe surfer-dudes and get on a surfari to the UK based mecca of all things wave-based – Newquay.

Now that I’m sufficiently embarrassed at the use of the surf-speak, let’s get down to business.

The Plan

This is how we project the weekend will pan out:
  • Arrive on Friday afternoon/evening.

  • A few welcome beers in some legendary Newquay establishments.

  • Early dawn surf check through bloodshot, hangover eyes.

  • A morning of beach games, including boules, Frisbee and, fingers crossed, sunbathing.

  • An afternoon of surfing tuition for those that need it, allowing plenty of time to get down on Saturday morning if you need.

  • An evening of party in some more of those legendary Newquay night spots with loads of other surf revellers.

  • Awake bright eyed and bushy-tailed ready for the morning surf lesson, raring to nail those bottom turns and finally get on your feet and stay there.

  • High-fives and goodbyes before the drive back to civilisation.

Surfing

The Animal Surf Academy (ASA) crew have BSA approved surf instructors who will be on hand to give you guidance and encouragement. With their help you could even be standing by the end of your first lesson! These classes introduce you safely to the water and how the ocean works. The essential objective is for you to enjoy yourself and have a taster surfing session so you can make the most of your first surfing experience.
For just £40 (£20 off the usual cost) you get:
  • A two and a half hour lesson on Sat at 2:30pm.

  • A two and a half hour lesson on Sun at 10:30am.

  • All your necessary equipment (Wetsuit, Rash Vest, Leash, Surfboard).

  • Free Animal wallet subject to availability.

To book the surf lessons or for more information call up the guys at the Overhead Surfshop on 01637 850808 and quote ‘SCUK’.

You will need to bring:
  • Suncream (fingers crossed!)

  • Towel.

  • Bikini/Boardshorts.

  • Food/Drink.

We'll be meeting at the Animal Surf Academy Newquay, based on Tolcarne Beach (directly opposite the safi) here, 30 minutes before each lesson. Tolcarne beach is part of a new complex with cafe, restaurant and the surf school. For more info on the beach visit www.tolcarnebeach.co.uk.

When you have booked, drop Stu an email on stu@soulsports.co.uk to let him know you are coming along.

Accommodation

We have a couple of accommodation options for you to choose from, from cheap and cheerful B&B bunks at the Safi Surf Lodge to finer B&B surroundings at the Hillcrest Hotel.

Safi Surf Lodge:

The Safi is a no-frills budget solution to staying in the surf capital of England. They offer clean en-suite bunk rooms with bed-linen. You’ll need to bring a towel and you don’t get a kettle in your room, but you do get 24 hour check in/out and access to the residents only ‘Sunset Terrace’ Bar. Situated right over the beach, with stunning views, the Safi is perfectly situated for our first Surf Bash. We have secured a 10% discount on their standard rates for the weekend, so SCUK members can stay from £18 pppn!

To book simply call 01637 872 800 and quote "SCUK".

For more info, check out their website: www.mysafi.com.

Hillcrest Hotel:

The Hillcrest is a comfortable and well furnished hotel with sea views and wireless broadband access. It is situated just 5 minutes up the hill from the Beach. The rooms are laid out in twins and doubles, so it would be advantageous to get together with another ‘Surfbasher’ prior to booking. The prices are inclusive of Bed and Breakfast. The price for this hotel is £30 pppn.

To book simply call 01637 875312 and mention you are there for the "SCUK Surf Bash".

Please note that En-suite Rooms have shower, WC & H&C hand basin and Standard Rooms (some with good sea views overlooking Newquay Bay and beyond) have H&C hand basins and WC on first floor and shared bathroom (WC and shower) on second floor.

Other Information

Stu will be around from Saturday morning on Tolcarne Beach - just look out for the SCUK flags. You can also contact him on 07711 402209. From this base we will have the usual beach games - Frisbee, Boules, Rounders etc. and we'll be praying the sun has his hat on for a spot of sunbathing and opposite-sex spotting. You can keep an eye on the weather here.

Surf's up dudes!
