![]() Onboard's relaxed jam format with spot prizes, giveaways and a bunch of good stuff for the ripper of the day. Top riders will compete in a super final.
[By Alex Spence from Chatham] November 12th saw a crystal clear blue sky day, much like you’d expect from a English summer, no hold on English summers are grey and drab, well it was a nice day. Over 30 riders had descended on Bracknell dryslope, to sample Hamish DUncan’s take on a snowboard competition. Snake the Fake is all about pushing your fellow riders to progress, and was split into two different competitions. Firstly style was going to be judged, and then technical ability, but it all seemed to roll into one big jam in the end. As always on the British scene the competition started slightly late, but by the time it began every one was fully warmed up on the slope and throwing down some crazy sh*t. First rider that got my attention was local guy and ex-skier Olly, I hadn’t seen him ride in a few weeks, but he’d picked up an ultra smooth fs180 nose press to bs180 out, which he was hitting up on every rail he got near. Rebecca Cullum was also standing out, at the start of the day she was the only girl trying spins, and after a few runs she was stomping some smooth bs360s. Laura Berry was claiming her Perma-Snow wings for the first time, and seemed to cope well on the new surface. The now O’neill pro rider was laying down all sorts of jib-wizardry and leaving almost every one else on the slope to shame, and with a broken wrist too. Good girl! Local rider Josh Knox (yeah another one) was hitting Bracknell’s big kicker for the first time, but was completely over-shadowed by his older Brother Ben, who was progressing his spins through out the day. Starting at BS360s, Ben seemed intent on showing the world that his bs720 at Airwars was no fluke. Chatham rippers were out in force too, Callum Wilkins was getting some very clean tail press to fs270 out on the gate rail and up flat kink, and some clean bs360 tail grabs. Sunny (e-unit) Elmore was, well doing alright to be honest, switch 270 on 270 off the gate rail, cab 5s, 50-50 gap to tail bonks on the up flat rail. And little Cody was showing off with nose presses to revert 270 out on the gate rail. At about this time the judges decided the jump was too small, so Bracknell’s big kicker was shifted up the slope to give a modest 28 foot gap to clear to make it to the knuckle. First run over Jack Shackleton hit up a huge, and very smooth bs180-indy, and landed miles clear of the knuckle. Old man and dryslope competition veteran Chris Woods had forgotten to take his tablets and thought he was young again, spinning massive fs and bs grabbed 360s. But as usual Sam Cullum was wooing the crowds with his inverted 720s, and clean as you like bs180s. That was enough excitement for the judges, and the clouds of smoke coming from the judging area were starting to arouse suspicion with the local constabulary. So the finalists were announced. This was to become what I thought was one of the closest fought finals I have seen in the UK. First to battle it out were the girls, Sam Rogers and Rebecca Callum were picked. Rebecca came out first with a boardslide on the up box, bs 360 over the kicker, and boardslide on the long rail. Sam came at this challenge by boardsliding the gate rail, switch fs180 over the kicker and again boardslide over the long rail. Both runs clean. For the men we saw all sorts of tech stuff being laid down, Ben Knox was trying to get bs900s, he was as good as there, but when it came to the crunch he just couldn’t stick the landing, Sam Cullum, inverted 7s and mistys in the big quarter pipe, Cody was getting 270s on 270 of the up box, spurring Frasier Dainton onto getting his 270s on nailed. The highlight of the final for me was Sunny e-unit he’d put some thought behind a unique line. Switch 270 on 270 off the gate rail, a huge clean grabbed cab540 over the 28 foot gap, and a transfer bs180 from the small quarter into the larger quarter. I was stoked to see that attempted, let alone stuck.
