Trafalgar Square: Tonight, the US team rode to victory at Red Bull Rail Storm, London’s first ever urban snowboarding, ‘rail’ contest. Spirits rose, even as the temperature plummeted to below zero, as more than 8,000 ecstatic fans packed into the London landmark, whilst hundreds more craned to see through the gaps in the fence line. Trafalgar Square, no stranger to sporting celebration, was transformed into a mini-alpine scene, with a 60 foot ski slope, oversized staircase and handrails, and 66 tonnes of real snow, made on-site overnight. Red Bull Rail Storm attracted 36 top snowboarders from all over the globe; including the best from Iceland, Russia, Finland and the UK. The UK team, led by Edinburgh rider Scott McMorris, bowed out in the semi-final, after putting in an impressive performance for the home crowd. But it was the USA team, led by Captain Eddie Wall, that clinched the incredibly tight contest, ahead of Finland & Sweden, to win 20 ounces of gold bars, worth more than £17,000. “This is the best day of my life!” whooped an emotional Eddie Wall, “It’s just the best experience I’ve ever had: to be snowboarding, with Big Ben and the London Eye right in front of you; London rocks!” For many in the crowd, Red Bull Rail Storm was the chance to see their heroes in the flesh: “The rider list reads like a who’s who of freestyle snowboarding!” said Tim Bodkin, from Chelmsford, Essex (24). “It’s just incredible, snowboarding Trafalgar Square! I was here for the Ashes party in the Summer. This is even better." Red Bull Rail Storm was a ‘sold out’ event: 8,000 FREE tickets were distributed via a random ballot at www.redbullrailstorm.co.uk. Red Bull is working with The Mayor of London, Oakley, Vans, XFM, Snowboard Club UK and Method Magazine to bring this exclusive, free event to London.
