![]() The series returns for a second year.
NBR presented by EA SPORTS BIG - SSX On Tour kicks off at Sheffield in Style The first leg of the Natural Born Riders Tour 2005 presented by EA SPORTS BIG – SSX On Tour kicked off this weekend, in the best possible style, at Sheffield Ski Village with a great turnout, despite miserable weather, and some awesome riding from all entrants. The night kicked off at 7.00pm with the regular one hour jam format for skiers and boarders. All the riders were watched by the two judging panels (one ski, one snowboard) who picked 6 riders in each category for the two run slopestyle finals. However before the finals got underway there was the Oakley big air to decide. This was run for skiers and boarders over the main kicker at the Ski Village. Everyone went nuts and threw down some big hits but in the end the prize went to skier Richard Martin who stomped a super smooth misty 5 and took home a pair of Oakley Wisdoms. After a brief pause to work out the finalists the slopestyle runs got underway. First up were ski and the girls with Mekele Carey taking second and Dark Summer pin up Becky Hammond taking the win and guaranteeing her place in the final to defend her tour title. In the under 16’s the competition was tight but the win went to Mike Nur, improving on his third place last year, due to massive hits in the half pipe and generally smooth riding. He was followed by James Woods in second and Ryan Kaye in third. Finally in the ski category was the over 16’s and there were some great performances notably from Tom Ross and Richard Martin who took second and third respectively, however the big winner in ski was Charlie Richards who also improved on his second place last year and took the win and his ticket to the final in Milton Keynes next month. Next up were the boarders and this was when the highlights of the evening took place. The girls went first and Laura Coates took third with a 360 off the top kicker but unfortunately a fall attempting a 50-50 on the bottom rail hindered her progress. Gemma Marshall improved on her third place last year by taking second with a run that included a smooth 180 grab and good use of course with a 3 on the quarter pipe. The win, in the end went to Lydia Ainscroft, who won this leg last year, with a run that included three big hits in the pipe followed by a big switch 180 to revert over the big kicker. Congratulations Lydia and we’ll see all you girls in MK. Under 16’s went next and was dominated by two brothers. Before we get to that though Simon Beck took third with a run that included a 50-50 boardslide and a big clean method air. In second was the middle of three brothers, Tom Knox, whose run consisted of a f/s boardslide, tweaked 360 and a big backside air on the QP. Under 16 winner on the night was Tom’s younger brother Sparrow Knox who took out the leg with a b/side 3 in the halfpipe, noseslide on the rail and a d/side 540 over the main kicker. Congratulations to the Knox bros and see you in MK. The last group of the night were the over 16’s and this was where the action got fruity! In third was Pete Helliwell, winner of the under 18’s last year, who stomped 3 360’s in the pipe followed by an underflip over the money booter. In second was James McElvaney who threw down with a mctwist, switch back 720 and the infamous crippler. However dryslope hero Mark Hartley took the win for the second year running with his signature crippler, cork 720, 270 frontflip and a backflip just for good measure! Congratulations to all the podium finishers who qualify for the finals at Milton Keynes Xscape on 26th November. See you all there!
