Natural Born Riders Final and Xscapeology
It's the final of this year's Natural Born Riders series. The evening will also be an Xscapeology event and they are promising the best park ever.
Well The Nokia Natural Born Riders (NBR) Tour is sadly over for this year and after 3 months of travelling around the country and finding the best riders in the UK the Winners have been decided. The whole tour has been a great success and great fun for everyone involved. The levels of riding shocked our judges and revealed the underground talent just waiting to explode in the UK. Castleford was the main event of the Grand finals. Before we could kick that off we had one more Oakley Big Air comp to run and the kicker that was built by the Castleford staff was crazy! Big and whippy, it meant a lot of air time and everyone had a go at winning the brand new Oakley MP3 playing Thump sunglasses!!! In the end they went to skier Will Burrows for consistently going big and trying a variety of tricks. In snowboarding, jib guy, Paul Rennie brought his skills to the kicker and took a pair of Wisdom’s home with him. With the Oakley Big Air completed the finals kicked off with the skiers going first, starting with the girls. The first runs were all solid with Becky Hammond and Shelly Jones leading the way however in the second runs the levels were pushed and Becky Hammond walked away with the win and a stack of goods from Animal and a pair of Armada Skis! In the Magic under 18’s the first run standouts were Mike Nur and Will Burrows. However in the last runs Burrows was unlucky and young Murray Buchan stepped it up to take the title and a pair of Armada skis. This just left the Neilsons mens event and it was epic. All the finalists stepped up with big runs including switch 540’s and unnatural spins to rails. Throughout the day Swiss Mark had been dominating all the obstacles with switch rails and the previously mentioned switch 540’s and was going to be hard to beat, however it took one clean run including a switch rail to switch to 540 to clean rail at the bottom for Andy Collin to take the title as well as a pair of Armada Skis and a holiday for two from Neilson Active Holidays. Not too shabby! The snowboarding, as it has been all tour, was ridiculous. The park was set up as a jibbers dream and the guys made the most of it. In the girls section a surprise appearance from Laura Berry piled the pressure on as she can bring it whenever she feels like it! Laura was consistent on everything she hit without going beserk. When it came to the results however, it had taken a little bit more for the win. Clare Roach had that little bit more and pulled a huge back flip off the kicker and a smooth 5050 down the big rail to take first place, the Animal goodies and a Sapient Snowboard. This girl does not even have an apparel sponsor so I wonder if Katie from Animal was taking note!! (I’m sure she was). Next up was the Magic under 18’s and what a comp it was. There are some great youngsters out there and it won’t be long before they shine. All the guys were having it but the standout and deserved winner was Justin Thompson. In the Neilsons mens comp the judges had just as much work cut out for them with the three podium placers really fighting for top spot. NBR favourite Steve Owen was ripping as ever, especially on the rails while Joe Sandy, a qualifier on the night and all the way up from Tamworth, pushed as hard as he could. However the winner was a rider who conducted himself quietly and professionally all night. With no fuss and good, solid clean runs Ben McHugh won the Neilson Mens comp. Ben also took away a Neilson holiday for two and a Sapient snowboard. On top of these prizes all the winners received Nokia 5140 phone handsets for their troubles. Stoked, you couldn’t get a better mountain phone, almost indestructible! With the Nokia Natural Born Riders revealed it was upstairs into the famous Xscapeology night to celebrate with a few beers! So the Nokia NBR Tour 04/05 is over for this season and a great time was had by all. Massive thanks to all the sponsors including Nokia, Magic The Gathering, Animal, Oakley, Sapient Snowboards, Armada Skis, Neilson Active Holidays, Document Snowboard Magazine and Fall Line Ski Magazine. Also big thanks to all the parks, Tamworth Snowdome, Milton Keynes and Castleford Xscape and Sheffield Ski Village, thanks to all the staff involved in the tour and finally a big thanks to all the riders who took part. You guys made it happen and we look forward to seeing you next year when the Nokia NBR Tour comes back bigger than before. See you in November!!!! NBR CREW!
