Nokia Natural Born Riders - Rd2 and Xscapeology
Ski & Snowboard competition. The night is also an Xscapeology.
The second leg of the Nokia Natural Born riders Tour kicked off in style last Friday night at the Xcapeology Freestyle night at The Milton Keynes Xscape. Over 200 people showed up for the night and although not everyone was competing a great night was had by all. All the competitors lapped up the chance of proving themselves to the judging team while non competitors took the chance to take tips from some of the pro riders in attendance. For snowboard this included Animal Team rider Johno Verity and Oakley boys Chris Southwell and Sam Cullum. A quick note on Johno as he also doubled up as the event MC and an active one he was too. Constantly MC’ing as he hit all the obstacles with the culmination being an explanation of a rodeo as he actually performed it. Commitment huh!!!! For skiers, an even bigger treat was in hand. Just over in Europe for a short while, two Armada Pro Team riders popped over for the comp. JP Auclair and Julien Regnier!!! It is very rare to get one of the World’s best over to the UK but last weekend we had two and they really showed why they are members of arguably the best pro Ski team in the World. The jam format comps kicked off at 7.30 with all categories, ski and snow, riding together. Judges watched each obstacle on the course, which had been perfectly built to suit the comp by the Xscape staff, and had to pick out up to 10 qualifiers for the finals later on in the evening. Snowboarding standouts during the jam included Sam Cullum, Mike Austin, Tom Gilmot and Clare Roach. The ski standouts were the ever smooth Ted Foster, Andy Collin and the posh and becks of UK freestyle Andy Topping and Shelly Jones. During the jam the Oakley Big Air Challenge was held over the big kicker with 2 pairs of Wisdom Goggles up for grabs. There was a big surprise in the snowboard category when Clare Roach stepped up with a big back flip and took away the prize. It takes some guts for the girls to hit this so a deserved winner even though there may have been more technical tricks from some of the guys. In the ski department the winner was a little easier to decide with the man know as ‘Swiss’ Mark (I’m guessing cause he’s Swiss) nailing a cross corked 540. By far the best trick of the day! After some difficult decisions for the judges the finalists were announced and the centre, bigger course was closed off ready for the 2 run slopestyle finals. The lady boarders were first out for the Animal Ice Maidens Comp and it was great to see the level they have reached. In third place was Jo Chastney, second was Clare Roach and first place with a clean run was Posy Dixon. Next was the Magic The Gathering under 18 guys and this is where the future talent was plain to see. Third was Ben von Leeuwen, second Tom Gilmot and first was Steve Revill. The highlight of the snowboarding came with the Neilson Active Holidays over 18 final. The standard had been awesome all night and now it was time to put it all together for two runs. Mike Austin took third mainly due to his various big spins over the big kicker. Sam Cullum got second with big sevens over the kicker and clean spins to smooth rails. First place went to Paul Rennie for super technical rail work. Next up was the ski comp. Again the girls kicked off and inevitably it was the super Shelly Jones who walked away with a lovely bag full of Animal product, again, for the Animal Ice Maidens Comp. Then it was the Magic the Gathering Under 18’s and it was close. Third was Ross Daniels, second place went to little Murray Buchan with Paddy Graham taking first with a smooth 360 over the big kicker followed by two clean rails including a sweet nose press. The highlight of the skiing came in the Neilson Active Holidays Mens over 18 comp. All the guys were killing it and in third was Andy Collins, second Swiss Mark and the rightful winner, despite falling on his second run, was the super stylish Ted Foster. All in all the second leg of the Nokia Natural Born Riders Tour was a success. A big thank you to all the sponsors including Nokia, Oakley, Magic the Gathering, Animal, Armada, Neilson Active Holidays, Sapient Snowboards, whose beautiful new boards were on display for all to see, Natives.co.uk, Fall Line and Document Magazines and a special thanks to the MK Xscape. Next stop is snowboarding only at the Tamworth Snowdome on 11th December, which coincides with the Document Snowboard Magazine Christmas party so it’s set to be a big one!
