Live 8 Charity Event
![]() This is in place of the proposed Xscapeology, but should be just as much fun.
Live Don8…Monkey See Monkey Do!...Review Ever since the groundbreaking work carried out by Charles Darwin many moons ago, man has acknowledged the link between himself and the existence of primates. Never before has this been more obvious than at Castleford Xscape on Friday the 1st of July. The event, Live Don8 was a mixture of freestyle and fun held to support the weekends big Live8 concerts and raise a bit of cash for those not fortunate enough to have an indoor snow facility, or food and houses and stuff. Chief organiser Damian Doyle had decided that the best way to capture interest was to dress as a monkey for the evening, and I can’t argue there, he certainly attracted some strange looks throughout the night! There was live music in Rockies Snowbar from Pocket Dad which had the non-riding contingent entertained until late in the evening, plus a raffle where some lucky punter won themselves a Westfield acoustic guitar and another a top of the range Nitro snowboard. With loads of prizes up for grabs on the slope courtesy of Original Home Detail, Subvert, SCUK, TSA, STANDINGsideways and EX-Shops, a basic format was decided on, with the emphasis on fun. Monkey See Monkey Do was the plan, so to be in with a chance of a prize, riders had to follow either the big hairy monkey on his snowboard or the rather attractive(!) female monkey on skis, watch them perform a trick, copy the trick, and if the monkey liked, you won a prize. Simple… or it should have been, but then someone gave the microphone to rookie MC Keith, who proceeded to deafen slope users and those in Rockies Snowbar with his poor impression of a monkey, rather than organize the riders into any kind of order. Eventually the monkeys got down to business. Riding down the slope hitting the kicker, 10 metre rail and then slide box, the snowboarding monkey laid down some sweet tricks with maximum primate style, followed by the train of boarders, who imitated the monkeys’ moves with perfect execution. Well Darwin did say there was a link, perhaps this is what he meant! It was the same story with the skiing monkey, Andy Collins, with just as many two-plankers lapping up the monkey’s line down the slope. So with a few prizes handed out to our wannabe chimps, the action moved onto the slide box for a serious session of Monkey See Monkey Do. The microphone was still being abused and mis-used by Keith, who was doing his best to encourage the more reluctant riders to come over and have a go, as the prizes were being thrown down faster than the tricks! Things almost got out of hand when the two monkeys spotted a giant banana on the slope, but order was safely restored in the form of a new competition, which involved slope vouchers (as rare as gold dust!) being attached to both monkeys fur, who then rode down from the top as far as they could get before being attacked (and I mean attacked!) by the hoards of little chimps desperate to get their grubby little mitts on some free stuff. So with the two monkeys battered and bruised, the prize pot empty and the riders satisfied with their freebies, the evening continued on with some good natured monkey business, jibbing and drinking. Funny, I don’t remember Darwin mentioning the primate’s fondness for alcohol, but there you go... Big thanks to all the sponsors for the evening, Original Home Detail, Subvert, EX-Shops, SCUK, TSA, STANDINGsideways and to Damian and Andy (Mr & Mrs Monkey!) all the Xscape team for putting it on, photographers/filmers and of course to everyone who came, rode and supported what is a very important cause.
