![]() Legion Rocks
Jam event for skiers and boarders.
Friday the 28th July saw the first annual ‘Legion Rocks’ Freestyle Snowboard & Ski competition at The West of Scotland Snow Sport Centre in Bearsden, Glasgow. The event was organised by Legion Snowboard of www.legion-snowboard.co.uk and was supported by the ski club and more than a dozen sponsors in the winter sport industry. Legion Rocks was billed as a ‘Jam Format’ competition which meant that the competitors themselves would vote for the riders they felt were best on the night. Those competing were split into two age categories; under 16’s and over 16’s. And each age category was further divided into disciplines and gender. Surprisingly there were no female entrants in the under 16’s event but close to 20 young lads took to the slopes in what was always going to be a closely contested event. As there were no girls in this heat there were 6 prize bags up for grabs and the order ran like this: 1. Danny McCormick (boarder) 2. Andrew Flynne (boarder) 3. Kieran McGuily (Skier) 4. Stevie Bratten (Skier) 5. Benji West (skier) 6. Mitch Flynne (boarder) There were also some spot prizes in this age group. Young Pete “2 FEET” Meadows took a prize for returning to the slope for Legion Rocks after a nasty arm break and Andrew Farkwinson took home a new pair of Gloves for competing with a thumb brake picked up in the warm up! The over 16’s event saw nearly 40 skiers and boarders entering with almost an even split between the two disciplines, there was also 10 girls in there to keep the guys on their toes. After 45 minutes of warm-up time the competition started. For an hour the guys got to ride and watch each other hitting the jumps and quarter pipe. This contest ran for an hour and then everyone in this group stopped for a well earned break and cast their votes, via ballot as to who they felt should go through to the ‘Showdown’. After an hour of some really spectacular aerials the tension built as the votes were cast, counted and those lucky enough to make the final were given the green light to head back to the top of the hill. Things definitely heated up for the final 30minutes of action as the ‘showdown’ got underway. The finalists all fed off the crowd cheers and there was plenty of support from those who never made the cut. Those that hadn’t made the showdown helped rank the performances of the 12 finalist and after half an hour of HUGE airs, technical spins and styled inverts they were finally dragged off the slope! Here’s how the cookie crumbled in the Showdown: ![]() Female Ski: 1. Jude 2. Vicky 3. Gail Female Board:1. Niki 2. Heather 3. Kara Male Ski:1. Graham McGrath 2. Ali Wreath 3. Ali Watson Male Board:1.
