Just 4 Girls
Just 4 Girls aims to provide the female British rider with a chance to sample kit designed specifically for her, as well as opportunities to meet the girls who are following the dream and living snowboarding.
[Official Release] On Saturday 13th November a first happened for snowboarding in the UK. Just 4 Girls was the first indoor snowboarding event aimed solely at the ladies. Along with raising awareness to the depth of women's product being produced we wanted to give girls a reason to come ride together. With 70 girls turning up to ride there were many other firsts. First times on a board, introductions to rails, tricks attempted and claimed for the first time. Hosted at The Tamworth Snowdome where they kindly gave us use of their upstairs bar and freedom to alter the normal set up of their freestyle snowboard night. Not being discriminatory the slope was still open to the boys, but with half the capacity crowd testosterone free there was certainly a different atmosphere to usual, somehow calmer with more reminders of the simple pleasures of snowboarding. There was a competition running through the evening, however trying to avoid the competitive nature of such things and keep a friendly and inclusive vibe, this was run as a team event. The credit for this has to go to the pro girls who came up for the evening, Sonia, Gilly, Jenny, Emma, Kat, Olivia, and Sara. They all captained a team of 4 rode with them and gave encouragement and advice on improving their riding or getting onto the rails. The effect and enthusiasm the girls brought was so evident as time after time woops of delight and applause rang across the hall accompanying the most contagious smiles. And there were prizes to be won. Best trick 50-50 to Frontside on the flat down by both Becky and Emily a worthy mention to Jo for gapping on the flat down, that was a 3m gap. As well as Overall, best slam and nicest air off the kicker. But due to the overwhelming support from the industry and brands that support women's snowboarding, there were plenty of prizes to go round and even those such as deserving for their own triumphs, didn't go away empty handed. The bar upstairs was never short of spectators for the on snow activities, but with some shopping to be done, advice to be found and people to meet there was a good bustle going on. Dropstitch was shown, the new all girls movie really showing how far ridings come on, on the global stage. Then during the grooming session the raffle was drawn. Tickets were sold in aid of Breast Cancer Research and prizes again donated from within the industry and in this respect is due as there was K2 board and bindings, Protest jacket, Nikita and Nfa clothing, Anon goggles, Etnies shoes, Gravis bags a Holiday from Insight Freeride and a clear top Burton board all signed by the Dropstitch crew. On stage presence was provided by Tim and Jon who did an amazing job distributing the goodies and raising good money for a great cause. In the end of the day everyone went home smiling and the chat rooms are already asking when the next one is. The success of this event came down to the collective efforts of a lot of people and big thanks must go out to all those that gave up their time and product, but it would have all been for nought if women didn't have such faith and strength to get out there and do things their own way.
