Halifax Air & Style
The Halifax Air & Style prepares to put you into orbit.
I was worried. It was Yorkshire. The sun was shining. But clouds were on the way. And it was windy. Rain was forecast. And I’d not packed my coat. For anyone who has ever been to Halifax will tell you ... if it is windy in the town, then sure as hell it'll be windy up the hill. I felt stupid. The slope looked like I wished it did when I head up there for board nights, obviously the giant kicker at the top of the slope was there, as was the permanent 1/4 pipe and table top, but Gary and the boys had pulled out a big phat yellow gas pipe, a jump on fun box, and a most delightful looking curved rail... All was set for a good comp. This good feeling almost vanished soon after I arrived when Sheffield rider Charlie Clark hit the 1/4 pipe hard and smacked his back on the backboard. Amazingly, this was just as the paramedics turned up at the slope. They checked Charlie out and he was riding again within about 10 minutes - the boy just seems to like pain (maybe its a south Yorkshire thing) cos every time we saw him, he looked like he was hurting some part of his body - all this took its toll and he eventually had to pull out of the comp - which was a real shame as he was riding pretty good - and it he's that good with parts of his body in bits then I look forward to seeing him ride when he's fully functioning. Once everyone found out Charlie was ok the comp got underway. The format was a two hour jam session, in which the riders were then whittled down to the top 10 or so, who then had two scored runs, which whittled it down to the top 3. I was stood near the judges (Steve Shea and Dom) and whenever they were asked how they were scoring the riders, they came up with some kind of answer which dodged the question ;o) but safe to say, they were looking at the rider's performance on all the obstacles - and early on, to me at least, the riding looked good. Sam Boys was buttering into switch 540s and mistys, but failed to pull them out of the bag when they counted. There were also a lot of 5s and 7s being thrown (huge ones by Vic Boys and Rob Yeomans, not to mention 9 year old Jamie Nicholls) - but quite a lot of people couldn't get the hang of the landing and were sketching out a bit. Down the bottom of the slope a few of the riders were having fun on the gas pipe and curved rail (Wayne Taylor was sticking one footed boardslides on the gas pipe and getting right around the curved rail - as was rob yeomans) and a number of the riders (not put off by Charlie’s incident) were going very big and spinny on the 1/4 pipe. It was a really good and chilled way to run the qualifying. I was unfortunately in the pub drinking when the 10 rider's who'd made it through were announced, but again, when I went out to watch their runs the standard was getting even higher and the landings were now being stuck - and it was no surprise that the 3 men who made it through to the "super final" were Wayne Taylor, Rob Yeomans and John Russell. As my lift was just leaving I heard someone shout that Mollie Boys span a 7 in the women's final, but I didn't get to see the men's final. I’ve since found out that Wayne Taylor won the event, with john Russell in 2nd and Rob Yeomans in 3rd. From a personal point of view I’m glad that Wayne won just for his act of generosity in lending me his coat when I was complaining about the cold :o) A great day all round, fosters was £1.50 a can, and I didn't get rained on. Well done Gary and everyone at Halifax for organising a top, chilled out friendly comp. It’s set the standard for the rest of the summer. There was no need to be worried, Halifax rocks...
