![]() High and Dry
Back for its eighth year.
[By Chris "Euroboy" Schulz] Pulling up at the John Nike leisure Centre in Chatham, both Neil Hutchings and myself knew this comp would set the standard for all the summer events to step up to. The sun was beating down and the tunes were already blaring. We were greeted by fellow Euroboy and the dayıs Master of Ceremonies, Jon Weaver. The Weave never failed to have a drink in his paws and as the day wore on, he managed to keep the hordes of scantily clad spectators entertained, in his progressively more drunken stupor. Neil and I got kitted up and joined the 70+ registered competitors on the slope. It really was a site to behold, with 2 ramps and over 13 rails, including the unveiling of the new 5ft high, 40ft long Rollercoaster rail. This was a beast, which only a handful of riders could claim to have successfully ridden the full length, and even fewer (if any) had it consistently dialled. The jam session got underway less than an hour later, by which time both me and Neil had already slammed, given up and resorted to spectating, filming and heckling in good ol' Euroboy fashion. The standard of riding was super good, especially considering the heat and dryness of the slope. As always Luke Paull managed to hold on to his melon-sized testicles through some huge backflips and Sam Cullum was spinning 5s and consistently stomping pretty much everything he tried. On rails, Ryan "Evo" Evans was looking smooth as butter, styling out all manner of switch tomfoolery and Mike Rhodes made up for his rather stupid-looking beard with consistently solid boardslides on the 40 foot animal rail. It is not often that the Northern snowflex pussies venture down south to ride dendix, but High and Dry welcomed a strong crew from Sheffield. Damian Doyle was oozing style as was my personal standout rider of the day, Charlie Clark. Charlie rocks on kickers both on snow and snowflex, but at Chatham he showed that he can also kick everyoneıs ass on rails. His super-steezed frontside boardslides on the Blue-J and his tailslide to switch frontside boardslides on the 40 foot Animal rail, put us southerners to shame. However coming from up North, he canıt take the pressure of a 2-run final and resorted to spectating and filming, which was probably a lucky escape for the other finalists. The final was a tight one, with Tom VanSomethingOrOther almost stomping a backside 720, but Sam took first with a consistent run of a backside 5 and a cab 3. Luke took 2nd place with a backflip and 3rd place went to Mat Peiris, a skier who had a simple but solid run, including a switch 180 on the kicker. Cody Hierons, at only 10, is not only already showing his man-sized balls on the slope with some beefy 360s, but also in the bedroom, where it is rumoured he has been having 13 year old girls from across the street stay the night. Let's hope social services don't find out what the snowboard scene is turning this kid into or they might make him take up football instead. The Chatham boys have really pushed Cody and their other local kids and evidence of this was the high proportion of pre-pubescent shredders. In the words of Neil, "there was enough young boys to keep me entertained all day." Weaver enjoyed keeping the crowds entertained, by giving them the chance to win prizes by betting on riders to perform specific tricks. There was also a sweepstakes placed on the Big Air Event which was battled for between Luke Paull and Chris Woods. Luke was going absolutely huge and the old cat Mr. Woods was just about ready to get out his pipe and slippers. But just in time, some drunkard stripped butt-spanking naked and slid down the slope with everything (though nothing too impressive) on show. This was surely just the motivation Chris needed to storm down the slope and stomp the biggest Mute of the day and walk away with a brand new board. As the proceedings came to a close, it was evident that a good time had been had by all, riders and spectators alike. With over 70 riders, hundreds of spectators, a sick slope set-up and a fully stocked bar, High and Dry has once again set the standard for events to follow. There's some words on the Forum.
