Halifax Snowboarding Competition
A competition on the only purpose built big air jump in the UK.
Due to work commitments I had already missed most of the day's events, but found myself finally winging my way up to Halifax at 3pm. Finding the venue was an achievement in itself as there are no signposts until a few metres before the steep cobbled uphill access road to the slope. Seeing as the town centre of Halifax is mere minutes away I couldn't understand the lacklustre signage - maybe they want to keep it a secret. Upon arrival I bumped into fellow forum'er, snowboarder and all-round nutter ProDog, who hadn't made the finals due to arriving quite late and not getting any practice in at all. Shortly after, Mr B and Basil arrived too. Andi Durrant from Galaxy 105 was supplying the tunes from the upstairs viewing gallery, doing a bang-up job. The MC left a bit to be desired though, constantly mixing the names and bib numbers of competitors up as well as having bugger all knowledge of moves that were being pulled on the slope. He was obviously being prompted by people 'in the know' as he would correct himself shortly after; "That's a phat flipside 360... Er, frontside 360". The same guy prompting him must have got fed up and left in the end as the MC gave up and simply called out "That's some spinny upside down stuff there..." Hmmm. Another notable event I missed was a photographer stood on top of the quarterpipe being wiped out by an errant boarder. It later transpired it was Russ Shea of Document fame! The final was split into 3 categories; Mens, Womens and Junior. Someone to keep your eye on is Georgie Mitchell, a pee-wee sized 8 year old boarder who for their final run landed a backfilp off the top lip adjacent to the kicker, then went on to do a handplant on the quarter pipe at the bottom! After the competition it was a free slope. I wished I'd taken my board now, but took solace in a few goes on ProDog's snowskate at the bottom of the slope. I quickly realised I'm far too rubbish for that too. In true Yorkshire style, the weather took a turn from plain old cold to horizontal rain in the space of five minutes. There was a mass exodus from outside to inside until the building couldn't take any more bodies. Seeing as I was in a seasonal t-shirt I decided it was time to head for home so I missed the award ceremony. It was probably a good idea I set off as some twenty minutes later I had another job to go to. Work does seem to get in the way of this snowboarding thing with alarming regularity.
