![]() Halifax Air & Style
An all day big air with the riders deciding the winners.
By Gary Pickburn - Slope Manager Halifax’s first true rider judged event went about as good as it gets. The system we used for judging was a simple vote system where each competitor voted for who they think should win each category. The votes were added up and the top riders from each round go through to the finals. The first round was a 1 hour jam session, all the under 18’s riding together using the whole slope as creatively as possible. Jamie Nicholls stood out as always with his corked backside 720’s, 540’s, 360’s, cab 3’s etc, going just about as big as the seniors. Victor Boys, was going huge with large amounts of style like always. The big surprise of the day was the high standard of the posse of kids that learned to ride at Halifax since last year, and are up sessioning most days. Richard Campbell was landing big bs 5’s all day, and he only had his first lesson at last years AIM Series. James Box was also stomping bs 3’ as smooth as you can get. Little 9 year old Will Smith and 12 year old Jake Latham who are ones to watch in future, have both only been riding a few months and were both landing nice grabbed 360’s. Although she was the only junior girl in the comp, Katie Ormerod deserves a mention, it’s good to see a six year old girl not afraid of hitting that big Halifax ramp, Katie’s name will probably be cropping up again lots in the future. Next up was the seniors, and one of the most epic sessions the slope has ever seen. Considering the conditions were not great for a snowboard comp (bit of wind and warm sun), the atmosphere and riding was amazing. Col Mytton was rider of the day at this point, gaining nearly all the votes in the qualifiers. I think Col landed or attempted every conceivable spin and flip in all directions, switch and forwards, Col, this is dryslope mate, your not supposed to be able to do that. Charlie Clarke was also doing some pretty amazing riding with his super natural style, and Charlie even managed to make it to the end without trashing himself like he normally does at any Halifax comp. Sam Boys was doing some nice underflips while sis Mollie was stomping clean bs7’s. Wayne Taylor was doing the usual BIG corked 7’s, Craig Howie from Scotland was doing the biggest smoothest misty 5’s imaginable. I heard a few comments throughout the day with people saying how the girls were hard to judge because they were all so close. The standard of riding was so high during the qualifiers that 8 senior men went through to the final, with 5 senior women. After an epic qualifier, we had a break and watched the freestyle ski session for an hour or so and got ready for the final which was amazing as well.
