Gorillas on the Piste
The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund is looking for fun-loving skiers and boarders who are willing to dress in a full gorilla costume (which they can keep afterwards) to complete between them 100 miles of real snow piste in just 1 hour.
If you thought that the yeti was the furriest thing to walk on snow, then think again. Gorillas on the Piste is an unmissable (and hilarious) charity challenge for skiers and snow-boarders everywhere. The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund is an international charity working to protect the worlds' remaining 650 mountain gorillas. They are organising a ski/board challenge at Xcape's real snow slope in Castleford. But this is no ordinary afternoon on the piste. The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund is looking for 100 fun-loving skiers and boarders who are willing to dress in full gorilla-get-up to complete (between them) 100 miles of real snow piste in just 1 hour. We'll provide the gorilla costumes, while the jolly nice folks at Xscape have kindly donated full equipment hire and exclusive use of their real snow slope at Castleford near Leeds – all we now are snow-sport enthusiasts like YOU! Where and when is it?Gorillas on the Piste will be take place at Xscape Castleford (near Leeds) on Saturday 12th June 2004. The challenge starts at 12-noon with registration from 10.30am. We'll need plenty of time to issue your gorilla suits and get you all kitted out for the slope so please aim to get there for around 11am. How much do I have to raise? There's a £35 registration fee to secure your fury place on piste - this will go up to £50 if you sign up on the day, but unfortunately we can't guarantee availability on the day. After that we're asking all our gorilla skiers and borders to try and raise at least another £65 in sponsorship. If all of our Gorillas on the Piste could hit, or exceed, this target we will hit our £10,000 fundraising target for the charity. So, what do I get for my £35?![]()
Who can take part? For safety's sake, the folks at Xscape ask that all participants are able to meet the minimum recreational standard: be able to link turns, control their speed and use a button/poma lift. In addition, The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund requires that participants are 4'10" tall (that's about 1.5 meters) or over as the gorilla suits are one size only and may become unsafe on shorter participants. What do I need to bring? The gorilla costumes are very warm and snug but they're not waterproof. So if you think you may spend more time on your bum than on your feet, then we suggest that you bring your usual waterproof snow gear to wear underneath (this can also be hired from Xscape for £5 per person). Don't forget to pack a pair of warm socks, gloves and bring a £1 coin for the lockers (this is refundable). All skiing and snowboarding equipment is included in your registration fee however you are welcome to bring your own. Top tip from some experienced gorilla costume wearers…We strongly recommend that you bring either a joggers headband, sweatband or a pair of ski goggles to help keep your gorilla mask in place - this will help you keep the eye holes in the right place so you can see where you're going! You may also want to bring a pair of scissors to alter leg lengths or make the eyeholes bigger. How do I get there?Xscape is based in Castleford which is roughly 10 miles south-east of Leeds at J32 of the M62 motorway. To get there by car, leave the M62 at Junction 32 and follow signs for Xscape. Xscape has 1,400 free parking spaces. Or take the train to Castleford Station then take a 10 minute taxi or bus ride. Take the 135, 136 or 137 bus service from Castleford Bus Station (opposite the train station) to Xscape Castleford. National Rail Enquiries; 0845 484950. What next? All you need to do to secure your place is complete the form on the Gorillas Events web site and return it to us right away. As soon as we receive your registration we’ll send you a Gorillas on the Piste Fundraising Pack to get you started. Then we’ll see you on piste in Leeds on the 12th. We’re so excited, we can’t wait! The Gorillas on the Piste event page can be administered by dunx (Dunx), stu (Stu Brass), spencer (Spencer Claridge) and office (Office). Page views: 8933 |
