![]() The Gnar Chicken And Tea Jib Jam
The series of events will take place to promote the movie and get more girls down to the slopes to ride.
By Kat Miller April 30th saw nearly 100 riders ripping in Spring conditions at Tamworth for the first of the Gnar Chicken & Tea jam comps. For those of you that are confused by the name it's the brain-child of the girl behind both the event and the up coming all girl DVD, Alexa Hohenburg, and breaks down as follows "Gnar cos we're gnarly, chicken cos we're chicks/girls and tea cos we're British"....so now you know! The evening was MC'd by local rider Tim Sandy with Stu Leonard putting out another good set-up for girls and guys alike to session. The evening aimed to be a fun jam session with rider voted overall prizes with the idea being that the girls progressed as much as they could over the course of the evening in order to win a React snowboard. The atmosphere was relaxed and fairly uncompetitive with the emphasis on fun, probably due to almost 50% of the riders being girls many of whom were pretty new to freestyling. The first half of the evening saw most of the riders getting used to the set-up and starting to throw down some tricks, some of the throw down prize winners at this stage were Jules Chappell for her switch 50:50 on the fun box, Chris Kightley 270 on to the fun box and Laura Hill for nose pressing the Burton flat down kink. There were also a few prizes handed out for some pretty impressive slams too. The big air comp on the Grand Prix kicker saw people going for length rather than tricks and made for some scary moments as the riders moved closer and closer to the flat of the landing but luckily everyone's knees survived. Only a handful of girls were hitting the kicker at this point so well done to Jules Chappell, Eve McKinnon, Kat (surname unknown) & Laura Hill. A mention should be made of John Weatherly and his fine back-flipping skills! The half time groom saw the secret voting taking place with riders voting for who they thought was the best male & female rider of the night and then heading to the bar. I was slightly disappointed that the Gnar Chicken & Tea teaser wasn't played as I'm yet to see it (problems with viewing .movs at work) but some riders took the opportunity to decide which Sapient board they wanted to demo in the 2nd half. After the break the riders got back into it, trying to win the last of the prizes for general riding, the girls were mostly rocking the box although Samantha Rogers seemed determined to get the Rainbow rail nailed before the end of the evening. Towards the end of the evening the fog started to come in giving that authentic mountain feel... I'm sure that Tam arranged this just for the two girls that made the trip all the way from France to ride and hence won themselves a T-shirt for greatest distance travelled. Check out the results! All in all a good fun event not marred by the slight slushiness of the snow caused by the change to hot weather outside. It was a shame there was no teaser and no coaching to encourage the newer riders as I feel this was a missed opportunity to encourage the shyer girls a bit more and drag them off the gas pipe at the top of the slope and get them on the other toys. The next Gnar Chicken & Tea Jam takes place at Calshot slope on 21st May so if you're not already heading up to Halifax for Cock of the North or you're scared of driving North get yourself to their indoor snowflex slope for the chance to win some gear and have some fun!
