Gnar Chicken and Tea
Some SnowFlex action for the hens and roosters.
The Third Gnar Chicken and Tea Jam rocked up to the Dorset Snow Centre on Saturday night in the form of a three hour long Big Air and Jib jam session, a perfect partnership to promote the girls British Snowboard Movie (going by the same name) and the newly opened Snowflex freestyle slope. The focus of the comp was on fun and progression and that was certainly the case – evidence seen in the number of smiling faces, newly stomped tricks, plastic-burn skin loss and prizes thrown out left right and centre. Saying goodbye to the traditional two run format, masters of the jam session, Alexa, MC Southcott and the panel of sophisticated judges urged the riders to try new tricks, heckling those sticking to their safety spins and inspiring balls-out riding from the boys and girls. Calling out tricks to be stomped in return for the bindings, boards and outer wear, highlights included the ‘two seventy off the danger-rail into the hedges challenge’ and the ‘straight-line the slopestyle course dare’ – met first by the ladies as Jo Chastney and Posy Dixon slayed the course at mach ten, airing over the box at the end. The big air jam also bought some wicked riding out from the riders, most notably from local boy Sam Downey who impressed the crowd with insanely massive airs and smooth fives in the quarter. Sam Cullum was throwing down as usual, bagging first place overall and a board for the sickest McTwist in the comp. Other notable riding came from Dan White slaying some stylish back ones and frontside spins, and Fraiser Dainton who at the young age of 14 was stomping fives and frontside boardslides with ease, taking home the most progressive male rider title. In the girls stand out rider of the night had to be Aberdonain Claire Frost, who having given up on backside threes, moved on to throw some solid fives, sketchin out on the landing, but it was clear they would be dialled soon – one to look out for in the future. Rebecca Cullum was on form representing team Bracknell, stomping back side threes to take third place whilst Posy Dixon took home first place managing for the first time to get both frontside and backside spins off the kicker – many thanks to the heckles of encouragement over the microphone. A special mention also goes out to eight year old Alannah Branny who was the most improved female rider of the night, learning how to link turns and killing the small kicker for the first time ever. Massive thanks go out to everyone who missioned through the brutal caravan traffic to get down to the slope, all the staff at the snow centre – particularly Ben from Big Dreams for providing extra prizes – and to the crew that made it happen, Alexa, Ewan and the Stella guzzling judges. I think everyone there had a wicked day, learnt some new tricks and bagged some great prizes… the Gnar Chicken and Tea Crew once again showing how much fun and progression can be had at a chilled out jam style event.
