[Official Review]
Saturday 27th of August 2005 saw the 4th Gnar event, this time held on the giant Dendix slope at Chatham. The slope layout was impressive, with a wide variety of rails, from the usual gas pipes to head high kinks and 60 foot long rails. There was something to scare and push the most hardcore drysloper. Some one had even laid on some Sun, a very rare thing this summer. So every thing was set for a good session.
Turn out was lower than expected, with only 2 girls entering a girls event. This highlighted Alexa’s aim with Gnar Chicken & Tea, get more girls into snowboarding, which can only be a good thing for us guys and the industry in general.
The Jam session started with about half an hour of riding around and hitting everything you could on the slope, with the judges dishing out prizes for upping your game. The first people to really start pushing themselves were the Knox brothers Tom 14 and Sparrow 11. The boys were straight out and sliding the raised C rail with ease, and hitting the 40 foot long Animal rail, with hardly any thought about speed checks. “Darkness” Dave Carter & local lad Tim both tried to get their first bs360s down, off what can only be described as a very small ramp. The ramp also saw a lot of action from Vince and Janine through out the day

After every one had got used to the slope set up, the Gnat team started throwing down spot challenges on each of the obstacles, holding mini session around each rail.
The first spot challenge I remember was one dished out specifically to me, and that was to gap the Blue J flat down rail, a kink shipped over from an American snow park. All attention then moved to the high rainbow rail, which needed to be front sided, this challenge almost took Sparrow Knox out of the competition, as the young lad fell with speed from the top of the rail, (about twice his height). With in minutes young Sparrow was back up and claiming the rail as his b*tch again.
About twenty minutes passed with every one throwing down their sickest tricks, and even trying new stuff, the Knox brothers once again were showing every one what to do by gapping the top of the rainbow and landing on the down section.

The Gnar team the beckoned every one over to the now almost legendary 60 foot grind box, over a third of a tonne of metal and plastic. A serious spot challenge of front siding the whole box, which was never meet by the way, turned into a an all out humour fest. With the MC deciding who ever could make him laugh the most would bag them selves some serious prizes. This resulted in some of the stupidest boarding ever witnessed, once again the Knox brothers were leading the way with high speed, shot gunned coffin slides, “Darkness” Dave attempting (and not successfully) front flips on back flips off. Old man Chris Woods’ joints even held up long enough for him to try some superman dives down the box.
Whilst this was going on some serious riding was still being thrown down, switch boardslides, crazy nose and tail presses, and every sort of combo imaginable were being attempted and stuck.

On to the Animal rail, one of the smoothest rails in Chatham’s arsenal, a double coping affair at 40 foot long and above waist height, it takes some bottle to give it a go, especially over dendix. The flavour for this session was shot gunned runs, with every hitting this rail as fast as there boards would let them. Stand out riding came from Emily who managed to do all 40 foot 50-50 for the first time, and then almost getting boardslides to the end nailed too.

Any how, the important part now, who won!

Mens,

3rd Place. Well a joint third place here, these two were inseparable in terms of talent all day long, The Knox Brothers took a goody bag each .
2nd Place went to Alex Spence.
1st Place went to Chris Woods, I think the judges were amazed some one so old could still walk unaided, let alone snowboard.

And now the important ones,

Womens,
Was a hard competition as there were only two girlies, both fairly equally matched.

2nd Place, Janine Smith
1st Place was taken by Emily Spicer for getting her 50-50s to the end of the animal rail, and then almost getting her boardslides down on it also.

All in all a great day, and a huge thanks needs to go out to Alexa for organising the day. This was the second Gnar event I’ve been too, and both have been amazing days, which have reminded me why I started snowboarding in the first place.
A big shout out to all of Gnar’s sponsors, a full list of these can be fund on http://www.gnarchickenandtea.co.uk/ along with a trailer for the forth coming Gnar Chicken & Tea movie, which rumour has it will be premiered later this year at Tamworth.

The Gnar Chicken and Tea event page can be administered by dunx (Dunx), stu (Stu Brass), spencer (Spencer Claridge) and office (Office).
