![]() It's a Girl Thing 04
Ever dreamt of being a sponsored skier? Travelling to the best resorts, competing and appearing in photo-shoots? Well, now you have the chance to make it happen...
Milton Keynes isn't the prettiest place on this isle but on Sunday night it was blessed with 18 of the UK's finest female freeskiers who’d travelled from as far as Bristol and Edinburgh to hit the Xscape rails and kicker. Their goal for the evening was to finish in the top 3 and qualify for December’s final in the beautiful resort of Engelberg, Switzerland, with the ultimate prize of a year’s sponsorship with The North Face, Nordica and Adidas Eyewear. The set up wasn't ideal but these were girls giving it their all from 10-year-old Abbie Macey, who first put on skis 18 months ago, to Faith Dyer who braved every form of public transport, bar donkey, to get there.Warren Smith of Freeski Britain, Nick Southwell and the Dark Summer team judged the contest, which was marked on style, difficulty and guts. Smith said: "The competition was awesome. The standard was amazing and we have seen riding at a similar level to competitions in Europe. You don't expect this on an indoor slope in the UK… Girls are the minority in freeskiing and the margin between them and the guys is huge but tonight has gone some way to closing that gap." Smith also singled out Liz Macaskill the first rider of the night to hit the kicker switch and Flossie Williamson who jumped bigger than all the rest. After the first round – an hour long jam session – 10 girls were chosen for the second phase where they were given two individual runs to secure a spot in the top three. The second round upped the ante with a frenzy of gutsy riding. Taking away the boys took away the attitude and proved that freeriding is a girl thing too. And despite some hard knocks and big stacks all the riders came up smiling. But the three winners who shone through and earned their place in Engelberg for the final were; 22 year-old Lorna Carmichael, studying at Edinburgh University, 18 year-old Becky Hammond from Sheffield and 20 year-old Beanie Milne-Holme, studying at Northumbria University. “Dark Summer (magazine) has definitely planted a seed for girls’ freeskiing in the UK. An additional 17 ladies entered but couldn’t make it tonight. The response to the competition confirms our belief that the women’s market is greatly under-serviced and we hope to make this an annual event.” said Daniel Crawford of Dark Summer. A big thanks to the sponsors; Switzerland Tourism, The North Face, Nordica, Adidas Eyewear, Freeski Britain, Natives.co.uk and a special thanks to Milton Keynes Xscape for their help on the night.
