Experimental Jam
A board jam with big air competition thrown in.
"Yeah okay, we'll come along. We don't normally cover dryslope events, but we'll come along." What with so much to do in the hectic liz-hurly burly world that is TheBoarder on a Sunday afternoon, we thought we'd thrash the van the 20 minutes up the A1 to Welwyn Garden City and the Gosling dryslope for Expermintal. Treats! We threw the van up on a seriously steep verge and rammed the handbrake on before literally climbing out. That sort of set the mood really as we passed from extreme parking to extreme Dendix riding. We have seen the future and it is dryslopes! This is crap of course, but the Experimental Jam showed us that what the AIM Series has showcased over the recent months is alive and well all over the UK if this jam session was anything to go by. Some seriously sweet riding was in store. The slope was crammed with toys. Three kickers, two rails, a picnic bench and a couple of low riders towards the end. One of the rails was special indeed and whilst the majority of the action was centred on the big kicker, the true heroes of the day were those that were tackling the four foot high, 10 step rail off a non-too tiny kicker. Perhaps as a measure of the beast was that on 6 riders were hitting it out of the 25 or so present. "I'm scared of that" was James Carrs answer to the pressure to ride it. Killing it were James Thorne and Chris Schultz. Wearing the beast away was Laura Berry - we're loathe to mention that she's only 13 now that she's the British Slopestyle Champion - but she's only 13 and was perhaps singled out once again as just about destroying everything on the slope. If there was any doubt in anybody's mind, whether the UK still had a dryslope scene down south, then Experimental put that doubt to rest. Nice slope, serious effort put into the event, some serious riding and a decent turn out of gogglers.
