![]() Xscapeology - The Industrial Revelation
Beats, booze and plenty of surprises on the night await!
Words by David Squires. As many of you will know who frequent TheBoarder and Xscape Castleford, the centre held its first large-scale open event this week: Xscapeology - 'Industrial Revelation' - and what a success it was. As I am, I'm sure you're all now looking forward to what the centre has in store for us throughout the summer period after seeing how the slope can be transformed into a fully functional 'funpark'. Firstly thanks and congratulations should go out to all of the staff at Castleford Xscape who made the event possible, particularly Anderson Garland who co-ordinated the event and his team of instructors and other slope staff, who planned and invested a lot of hard work into constructing the 'funpark' and also being there on the night to help out. Out on the slope the were 3 flat rails (3 metres long), the flat/down/kink rail, the rainbow rail, the new funbox (3 metres long 1 foot wide), the new 'booter' (5 foot cheese wedge with a 15 foot gap / flat to a nice 20 foot gradient landing) and the Ford Fiesta (Dukes of Hazard style) with a kicker over the roof and a jib rail off the bonnet. So there was plenty of stuff out to minimise congestion and make for good sessions. The fun started at around 18.30 on the Saturday evening with a kicker session on the new (and rather large) 'booter' built specifically for the event. Unfortunately I missed the earlier part of the night, hence the lack of kicker photo's, but had been told that there were 'inverts a plenty' off the new 'booter'. The session going off on the kicker (I have been told by a skier... ahem!) was being dominated by the skiing contingent that had attended on the night with Steve Limford, Andy Collins and Joe locking it down with a variety of inverts and large trick attempts. Sessions moved around the slope throughout the night and there was a remarkably 'fun' feeling to all the sessions going on with plenty of encouragement and 'yeahs' for all involved. The funbox was the next to see some action getting a serious battering from the likes of Charlie Clark, Kat Hall, Wayne Taylor and Johnny Russell with 270's on to 180's off, one foot nose slides, some smooth nose and tails to reverts out and just a variety creative jib action - it was seriously fun. Next it was the Fiestas turn to session with a plenty more inverts and one footed airs from Tom Twelvetrees, 7 attempts from Wayne Taylor and some smooth 3's and 5's from Charlie Clark. Onto the flat/down rail again plenty of creative jibing and skiers and boarders pushing each other to land their tricks. The sessioning finished when the slope closed at 2300. The rest of the action took place in the bar with everyone now sessioning the booze. There were some great tunes from the band 'The Hoarse' plus hip hop and breaks from 'The Turntable Assassin', not to forget some strange bikini clad women performing some kind angle grinding extravaganza (pictures reserved for my personal collection [Ed. - spoilsport]) in the bar, 'Tu-Tu' I think they were called. Some will have wished they had stayed in the bar whilst I’m sure there are others who wished they had left for home early - you know who you are. Plenty of booze was consumed whilst the awards and prizes were given out to those who performed in the fun comps - good sessions were had by all and the night was a 'blast'... top one.
