Cally Jib Jam
Jam format chilled competition at the indoor snowflex slope.
By Matt 'The MC' Walder.
They were cordially invited, and cordially they came from as far afield as the VZ Trials earlier that day in Milton Keynes and even Australia, although I’m pretty sure this comp wasn’t the only reason for the journey from down under. The sight that beheld the competitors and audience as they entered the hangar at Calshot was a veritable six-shooter of rails, salvaged from previous Yellowsnow comps or built by Kinky Rails of Yeovil fame. They consisted of a beauty of a Rainbow rail, a large flat box-section rail, an enormous battleship rail, a flat down kink, a small flat box section, and a c-rail.
With the temperature inside Calshot rapidly approaching absolute zero, spectators had to either huddle to keep warm or retire to the warmth of the bar. This did little to stop the riders making full use of the awesome set-up. Tricks varied from the technical ‘switch-butter to 50-50/boardslides’ of Si Belson and ‘hit the rail and spin at least 720 down it before dismount’ of Sunny Elmore, to the pure hammers of Luke Paull’s huge battleship gaps and late-comer Tom Love’s crazy frontflips over the Battleship. The only rail that seemed to be causing some issues was the C-rail, which nearly bit the nose clean off Guy Hodges board. But eventually a few riders with perseverance managed to tame her, including Luke Paull and Jake ‘Mushroom’ Terry on skis! In fact Jake’s skills on this and the more technical of the rails (including the battleship and the rainbow) combined with his height of about 3feet led to lots of awww’s from the crowd and also won him the Exstore’s People’s choice award, voted for by the audience and netting him £50 of Exstore’s Vouchers.
A pair of Vans snowboard boots was the prize for the shredder of the night which was voted for by the riders, and the recipient for his strong and consistent riding across all the rails, was Callum Wilkin. The jam session went on for a solid three hours, with many prizes handed out, the groups were whittled down to 5 finalists in each group. The strong riding in the finals capped what was an awesome day, and the MC was exceedingly handsome.
