![]() Calshot Jib
All the rails will be coming out or this event on the indoor Snowflex at Calshot.
What a day! If you weren’t there you missed out on riding some of the sickest collection of rails around and watching some of the best jibbing going at the moment. The rails Yellowsnow had built for this comp where sweet, from left to right on the slope there was; · A 18 foot, meter high ‘ADDICT’ rainbow. · A 15 foot kink (6 foot flat, 6 foot down kink and 3 foot flat). · The 19 foot ‘Just Add Water’ double barrel gas pipe 2.5 feet high (there was no ramp on to this just a single yellow gas pipe cut to make a ramp). · A 13 foot 1.5 foot high single metal rail and a 6 foot long 3 foot wide metal topped grind box. (if anyone wants to borrow these puppies for any other comps then call Toby on 07974027873 and we can arrange something) The comp was basically an all day jam session. After the competitors where given the format of the comp they where left to just go ride, no three run set, no pressure just the opportunity to go ride with other people all wanting to progress at jibbing. There wasn’t really any warm up period, if I remember right Jon Weavers first jib was a frontside nose slide! From the start of the session boarder and skier alike where throwing it down, pretty much any jib you can think of someone did it. BS nose slide to frontside tail tap on the 19-foot gas pipes (Luke Paul), BS lipslide (Jon Weaver), solid BS boardslides from Jonah Andrew and Sean Hardick, FS Tailslide 270 out (Andy Mills). We saw it all, switch frontside revert out on the 19 foot gas pipes, phat nose presses on the gas pipes (Steven Fellows), 5050 up rainbow to BS 180 over the rest of it, from 5050 on first section of kink to gapping the rest (Matt Walder) to BS nose slide to BS 270 out on the kink (44?) The ladies where pushing themselves as well, Kate Leggatt was doing 5050 to frontside on the low rail and 5050 to BS boardslides over the rainbow rail. Not to be out done Kat Marples was 5050-ing all the rails in her way, kink included, sick. The skiers that turned up where also stepping it up, I don’t know much about freestyle skiing but if you watch some one come in backwards grind the kink and come out backwards I would have to say that that deserves respect. Also thrown down by the skiers was railslide 270 out, gap to railslide on the kink, railslide up rainbow to 270 over the rest of it. The best trick I saw all day from the skiers was a fakie 270-railslide fakie out! Sick. All this sick riding was accompanied by the dope tunes from Abdullah and Meta4 on the decks, thanks boys. This session pretty much went on all day so everyone could ride for as long as possible but always under the eyes of the judges Josh ‘Wolf’, Mark, Mike and Gareth ‘Gesus’ Edwards. At 2 points during the jam session there was a ‘trick for prizes’ section. In the first section the judges gave away prizes for the best jibs on the gas pipes, low metal rail and grind box and pads for the best slam. This went to Steven Fellows who was persuaded to try a switch frontside on the gas pipes; he failed, slammed on his knee and grated his arm but got the pads (that was kinda my fault, sorry!) The second prize section centered around the gas pipes, kink rail and the rainbow. Again sick riding from everyone. Tom West slammed one of the hardest smashing his knee on the kink (oh yes and catching his face on it and ending up draped over the bottom section of the kink!) he got the knee pads, the wrist guards went to Kat Marples to try and get her to hit the kink (she did later on). At around 3.30 the jam session came to an end, over 3 hours of solid riding, some of the riders where beat, time for a well-deserved beverage! At this point the judges had to decide who should go into the final, no easy decision if you had seen the standard of jibbing that day but decide they did, 8 male riders, 2 female riders and 3 skiers. The finalists where: Just Add Water best Male Simon Joyce Jasper Watts Luke Paul Tom West Jon Weaver Tom Brooke No. 44 (I really can’t remember your name very sorry) Steven Fellows Salomon best Female Kate Leggatt Kat Marples Experimental best Skier Ben Hawker Nick Southall David Houghton There wasn’t gonna be a 3 run final, there was, instead, a 30 minute session a bit like a surfing comp. This is much better as the winner is the person who’s pushing themselves the most, the best, most committed, overall impression, bag of tricks etc. So for 30 minutes the finalists really pushed themselves watched by the judges and the crowd. This is where some of the sickest jibbing was seen all day, backside tailslide on the gas pipes and switch boardslides on the kink from Jasper, gap to boardslide on the kink, switch gap to boardslide on the kink and half cab to 5050 on the kink from Tom West, Simon Joyce did a (this is sick) switch tail butter to 5050 to frontside down the kink rail! I could go on but this review would turn into a thesis! After 30 minutes the final came to a close with a round of applause from the crowd and competitors alike, it was now up to the judges to decide the winners (very very hard decision). After a beer and deliberation the winners where chosen Salomon best Female 1st Kat Marples (ladies Burton freestyle Boots) 2nd Kate Leggatt Just Add Water best Male 1st Tom West (Lib Tech Jamie Lynn snowboard) 2nd Simon Joyce 3rd Jasper Watts 4th Luke Paul (it was so close we had to add a 4th place) Experimental best Skier 1st David Houghton (Alphanumeric jacket) Joint 2nd Nick Southall and Ben Hawker Once the prizes had been dished out there where 2 prizes left. Throughout the day everyone (competitors and spectators) had been given a slip of paper so that they could choose the ‘peoples choice’ snowboarder Sponsored by ‘ADDICT’. Each person was asked to write the number of their favourite rider in the space provided as well as their own name in the top right corner. All the slips where collected and counted and the ‘peoples choice’ was Jasper Watts who got another bag of goodies to go with his 3rd place. All the slips of paper where put in a bag and one was pulled out by Matt Walder the winner was Marisa Davies who went home with a brand new Salomon snowboard. All there is to say now is thanks for a sick day, the riders for turning up, pushing each other, the spectators for their support. Yellowsnow (Toby Andrew) for organising the competition, Jonny for welding the sickest kink in the south, the companies who donated the prizes – Just Add Water, Addict, Salomon snowboards, Experimental and Offbeat Sportz. Calshot for letting us pay for the slope, the DJ’s, Abdullah and Meta4 for sick tunes all day and everyone else who was involved in helping to put this on, Sven, Matt W, Andy, Kate, Simon, Toby (again). Sorry to the next door neighbours who had to endure weeks of constant noise from the grinders whilst we where making the rails. Thank you, thank you, and thank you.
