![]() The Burton Am Tour
The Am Tour, Burton’s new contest series for the next generation, launches this month. Focusing on the freestyle disciplines the tour is to hold national events in various European countries for boys and girls under 18. Starting this week in Holland the Tour moves to Xscape Milton Keynes on the 5th November.
Saturday brought the second leg of the Pan-European Burton AM Tour to the UK’s Milton Keynes Xscape. A new concept for the next generation of riders the Burton AM Tour will be heading across Europe in search of the most talented under 18’s riders. The Burton AM Tour will create a ranking system for young riders all across Europe linked to the Ticket To Ride (TTR) world-rankings. The TTR series includes all the best rider driven events and it’s ranking system is the most respected by the snowboard community. For the Milton Keynes stop the Burton Am Tour riders were greeted with an outstanding indoor slopestyle course that also incorporated the Burton Black Metal rails. The size and variety of these completely failed to intimidate the riders who tore up the course with style and commitment. Using a jam format the riders had 3 hours to get in as many runs on the slopestyle course as they wanted. The local riders, Ben, Billy, James and Laura, quickly looked to be the stars of the day, but there were heads turning all day and it was inspiring to see how much young British talent there is these days. In the boy’s category, the glory of the top spot went to James Carr with Ben Van LeeuwEn and Matthew "Billy Nielson close behind. Each of them showing 270’s onto the rails as well as switch slides all put together in solid runs. James’s combination of tricks and an almost lazy style that often disguises the technicality of his riding giving him the edge. The girl’s flag was flown by Laura Berry who yet again showed the smooth style and lack of fear (riding with a broken wrist) that has come to characterise her riding. Emily Richardson rode well for a solid second and a rapidly improving Sam Rogers finished third, both having their strongest competition runs to date. In the under 14’s section a very metro-sexual looking Sparrow Knox killed it to beat Cody Hierons into second and Gareth Andrews into third. Burton would like to thank the Milton Keynes Xscape for hosting the event and providing a great slopestyle course. Many thanks to the tour organisers Andi and his crew from Move the Crowd for bringing the Burton Am Tour to the UK and providing a slick operation. To Hamish McKnight, Jono Wood and Olly Lambourne for judging. Finally to all the riders that participated and showed that the future of snowboarding looks very bright indeed!
