![]() Burton Black Metal Rail Jam
Burton's new toys finally come to rest at the SnowDome.
On Saturday 19th November The Tamworth Snowdome hosted the final leg of Burton’s Black Metal rail jam. The transformation from sledging hill to Burton’s Black Metal stomping ground was set and Black Metals 3rd and final coming for 2005 thundered to life. As expected the night was a mammoth success thanks to the 70 dedicated riders who were keen to stamp their mark on the rails and ride off with prizes galore. The standards of riding took on new feats of technicality and magnitude not yet seen before in the UK’s fridge scene. Judging was another near impossible task and trying to get a final 10 was mind numbingly hard, with such tricks as switch frontsides, front blunts and 270’s on, off and through kinks being common place. There were even attempts and success’ at flips off the rails and this was before the super final had even started! Those that shone brightest were: 1. Mike Austin 2. Robb Mann - Winner of the BBM board 3. John Weatherley Other finalists: Steve White, Ben Hitch, Gary Greenshields, Tom Downing, Joe Sandy, Mark Ruparelli. 1. Kate Scott 2. Alexa Hohenburg Other finalists: Kat Miller, Emily Richardson. Step up the Super Final. The super final takes the winners of all three events in the series and pits them against each other to find the lord and lady of Black Metal. Nine men and six women took the roof off Tamworth’s fridge, battling it out head to head in the clash of the titans. Burton’s Black Metal super final captivated all inside the fridge. Riders watched with baited breath, the gallery was full to capacity, the bar windows full with onlookers, all trying to catch the action and the final did not disappoint! Joe has been knocking on the podium all series and this time nailed his 270 on 270 though the kink to 270 off solidly and took 3rd spot. Austin was on form all night and was so good to see what a bag of tricks he now possess taking tailslides and boardslides to 270 out on the c, as well as backsides through the kink all as easy as the following morning. Austin was also picked out by Hamish Duncan from Onboard as most consistent rider as part of the Snake the Fake tour. In the end it was Chris Chatt who’ll be taking his place at the Burton European Open and have the chance to put tricks like his switch 270on frontside through the kink to 270 off on a global stage. Kiwi Kate Scott put the pressure on the home crowd and took the ladies place with a solid easy style on the kink and the c box that a lot of the boys would be jealous of. Super Final results: 1. Chris Chatt 2. Mike Austin 3. Joe Sandy 1. Kate Scott – Winner of Gtwin board 2. Posy Dixon Both Chris and Kate have now secured their places for the Burton European Open in Laax where they can step up and throw down with the worlds best and rub shoulders with their peers. We would like to hand out big thanks to the staff at Tamworth’s Snowdome for hosting the event and helping with the set up. A big thanks to James Murray and Dunx for taking great shots from the night, check them on www.burtonblackmetal.com and www.snowboardclub.co.uk. Hamish from Onboard mag for handing out tonnes of his own spot prizes, Martin and Sheela from Bluebird, Dan the DJ for keeping it black. The Burton Black Metal crew of Hamish McKnight, Gary Greenshields and Olly Lambourne for building and tweaking the rails, all the judging and a million other tasks. Lastly to all the dedicated riders who made the event such a success, pushing the sport forwards and becoming a force to be reckoned with. Burton Black Metal will be back next year, thanks for all your support and see you then!
