More new toys arrive in the fridge, courtesy of Burton.
Like a snowball heading down the fall line, but with rails, Burton’s Black Metal event gathered up riders like snow for the second of its trilogy of fridge competitions. 75 of the UK’s most dedicated and without doubt most talented riders joined the Burton Black Metal following at Milton Keynes Xscape to make November the 5th a real fireworks night. Hamish and his crew had spent the previous week refining each of the three 9 metre rails for the huge turnout of Britain’s best riders. They fought out an incredibly close competition, with riders going off in quick-fire succession all to a soundtrack of black metal music, straight from the depths of hell. The riders threw down a host of technical tricks; driving the crowd and each other on with balls-out showmanship. For pure bravado Joe Sandy and Jo Chastney deserve props for gapping the 6 metres to the end of the kink rail. Others pushing for a place on the podium were Thom Boddington and Alex King. Unfortunately for them, the level was so high that making the podium meant that you needed insanely technical, super clean tricks and to ooze style. Final glory went to Rennie for a switch frontside to Pretzel made to look so easy, totally belying its technicality and ticking all the boxes. The strong women’s field laid it down with a riding standard never before seen in the UK. A final of five women rode as if possessed. Laura Berry, despite riding with a cast on her wrist, continued her winning ways from the afternoon’s AM tour event to beat Posy and Felicity into 2nd and 3rd. Make sure you come to the third of the Burton Black Metal trilogy, including the Super Final, at Tamworth’s Snowdome on the 19th November. You can count on it being the sickest night of riding ever. A big thanks to James Murray and Dunx for taking the great shots from the night, check them on www.burtonblackmetal.com and www.snowboardclub.co.uk. Thanks also to the staff of the Milton Keynes’ Xscape for all their help and for hosting the event. On the PA, thanks to James Thorne, our budding MC, who handed out bags of spot prizes to riders as they threw down, and to Dan the DJ, who managed to intimidate the local skiers within 5 minutes, by playing Black Metal as loud as the speakers would handle (not loud enough). The Burton Black Metal crew of Hamish McKnight, Gary Greenshields and Olly Lambourne for building and tweaking the rails, all the judging and a million other tasks. Thanks also to the staff of TSA for their help and lastly to all the dedicated riders who made the event such a success pushing levels of riding to new heights. Huge Thanks!
