British Universities Indoor Snow Championships
The Northern leg of the pioneering University indoor championships.
BUISC North Report The Northern leg of the pioneering indoor championships introduced by this year’s BUSC committee kicked off in Xscape SNO!zone Braehead on Wednesday, with unis from all over Scotland, and a large contingent from the north of England wanting a piece of the action. Over a hundred competitors gathered together in the biggest competition held at Braehead so far! The day commenced with the racing, with Dryslope champions Edinburgh and the Newcastle teams looking very strong. Newcastle’s Matt Bruton and Racheal Adcock mopped up the ski slalom, while Durham’s John Moore and Claire Frost battled their way through to win the Boarder Knockout Slalom. Edinburgh dominated in the Dual Team Slalom, with the A team beating Aberdeen in the final, and the B team sharing the 3rd/4th position with Newcastle A, who were looking hot until a straddle in the semis put them out of contention. Proceedings then switched to the other half of the slope with a 2-hour Jam Session for the Nike ACG Slopestyle on a 4 rail/box mixed set up. The riders pulled some ballsy tricks out the bag to impress Malcom Judd, BUSC’s qualified judge from New Zealand. Special mention to Mark Watson from Edinburgh for his front flip off the raised box! In the best of two runs final, Andy Wilson from RGU, the BUDS Big Air champion, came out on top in the skiers, with a switch onto a rail, 270 onto the raised box riding out switch, and a one footed slide on the flat down box. It was pretty close for the top spot in the female boarders, but Claire Frost from Durham pipped the competition with some styled board slides and nose slide reverse 270 out on the raised box. The highlight of the night was the male boarders, with some top quality riding on show. It was an all Edinburgh podium, with Mark Watson claiming 1st place with a smooth run including a switch backside 270 on, 270 off the box. Qualifiers from BUISC North will be invited to compete at the BUISC Finals at Xscape SNO!zone Castleford on the 28th of February. The BUISC Finals will run in conjunction with Ski2Help, the all day skiing charity event organized by Louise Jennings from BUSC 06, which has raised over £40,000 over the past 2 years that it has been in existence.
